Backpacking in Pendembu
👀 For curious travelerstown ranked #16
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

Pendembu was once the end of the line, a railway terminus where steam-era Sierra Leone met the eastern forests; today you find rusting track and a dusty junction town. It sits in the east of Sierra Leone, in Kailahun District. Roads here are rough and red, so expect slow shared vehicles and a day lost to bumps; carry cash, since no ATM serves you. Evenings are generator hum, radio music and charcoal smoke. Unlike busier Kenema, Pendembu has no travelers’ scene, so you meet locals, not backpackers.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #16 town in Sierra Leone
Why visitors keep coming back

Pendembu suits slow travelers who want the east without a tour group. Its main draw is the old railway legacy: the abandoned station and rails mark the line that once ended at the town, and walking them takes an hour. It also works as a practical stop on the road toward Kailahun and the Liberian and Guinean border areas. Stays are brief, usually one night in a basic guesthouse. The social side is local: market chats, Poda-poda stops, and a bar or two. Hikers and curious solo travelers who like unpolished places will enjoy it. Anyone wanting hostels, cafés or nightlife should skip it.

💡 HighlightsTop highlights of Pendembu

  1. Pendembu Railway Station ruins: the old terminus of the Sierra Leone Government Railway, with overgrown platforms and rusted track. Free, 30 to 60 minutes, best in morning light.
  2. Pendembu Central Market: palm oil, cassava leaf, dried fish and secondhand clothes on market days. Free to enter, 1 hour, best before midday.
  3. Walk along the old rail line: follow the track out of town through farmland and swamp, with children waving and birds overhead. Free, 1 to 2 hours, best early morning or late afternoon.
  4. Pendembu Junction: where roads from Kenema and Kailahun meet, loud with motorbikes, vans and traders. Free, 30 minutes, best at midday for the busiest scene.
  5. Local palm wine and cookshop stop: sit in a roadside cookshop for rice and sauce with townspeople. Meals are cheap, about US$2 to 4, 1 hour,

Pendembu itself is small, so start with the railway station ruins early while the light is soft and the heat is low. Nearby, Kailahun town and the forests around Gola Rainforest National Park make good outings.

🏘️ NeighborhoodsKey areas and districts to know

Pendembu is small enough to cover on foot in an hour, and its few areas differ mostly in how much noise they carry. Wear sandals, because red laterite dust turns to slick mud in the rains.
  • Railway Station area: The old terminus of the Sierra Leone Government Railway sits here, with rusting rails and a quiet, faded colonial feel. Walk it in morning light, when the metal is warm and goats graze between sleepers. Ask before photographing buildings, since some are still used.
  • Main Market and Highway Strip: Engines, radios and traders calling prices crowd the main road. Smoke from charcoal grills carries rice, cassava leaf and fried fish. Market day is busiest, so arrive early for the best produce, and carry small notes because sellers rarely have change.

⌛️ 1 day1-day itinerary for Pendembu

Keep the day on foot, with a long rest in the afternoon heat. 7:30 AM: Railway Station ruins. Start while it is cool and walk the platforms and rusting track, thinking about the steam trains that ended here. 9:00 AM: Old rail line walk. Follow the track out of town past farm plots; it is quiet and less visited than the center. Turn around after an hour. 11:00 AM: Central Market. Browse the stalls, taste fried cassava or groundnuts and greet vendors. 1:00 PM: Cookshop lunch and rest. Eat rice and sauce, then rest in shade until the heat eases. 4:00 PM: Pendembu Junction. Watch vans, motorbikes and traders at the busiest crossroads. 6:00 PM: Evening seat in town. Sit outside with a drink as generators start and the radio plays.

🌤️ When to go?Seasonal considerations and timing

Pendembu is easiest from December to March, when roads are firm and days run about 25 to 33°C (77 to 91°F).
  • Dry Season (Nov to Apr): Dusty harmattan haze in December and January, strong sun, and the highest transport demand.
  • Rainy Season (May to Oct): Daily downpours, 22 to 29°C (72 to 84°F), muddy tracks, lower prices and fewer vehicles. August is the wettest.
  • Daylight: Around twelve hours year-round, so plan travel for the morning.
Book onward rides a day ahead in the dry months, when seats fill early.

🛏️ Where to stay?Best areas to stay in Sierra Leone

The area around the main highway junction is the most practical place to sleep in Pendembu. Budget guesthouses are few, with simple rooms rather than dorms, so expect to pay US$8 to 20 a night. Being near the junction means shared vehicles pass the door at dawn, which is handy for early departures but loud, so earplugs help. Back streets are quieter but dark at night and a longer walk with luggage. Power is patchy, so choose a place with a generator or bring a power bank. Confirm the room in person, since online listings are rare and phone signal is uneven.

🚌 Getting aroundTransportation options and practical tips

In Pendembu, a shared motorbike taxi ride across town costs about US$0.30 to 0.60, paid in cash in local currency at the end, so carry small notes. The town is walkable end to end, but the road east and west carries diesel trucks, minibuses and a constant horn chorus, and the dust coats everything. Public transport is informal. Vehicles leave when full, not on a timetable.
  • Walking: Free and fastest within town. Go early, before the midday heat flattens the streets, and watch for potholes filled with rainwater.
  • Okada (motorbike taxi): US$0.30 to 1 for local hops. Agree the fare before climbing on, and ask for a helmet since few drivers offer one unprompted.
  • Shared minibus or poda-poda: About US$3 to 8 to Kenema (roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours) or toward Kailahun. Vehicles wait at the highway junction

  • Shared taxi (car): Slightly pricier, US$5 to 10 for longer routes, with a bit more room. Pay the driver on arrival and keep your bag on your lap if it holds valuables.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

Pendembu is broadly calm, and most problems are small. Streets are unlit after dark, so carry a headlamp and avoid walking alone late, especially on the highway edge where motorbikes pass fast. Solo travelers are usually met with curiosity and greetings. Officials at checkpoints may ask for small payments; stay polite, show a passport copy and wait patiently. Overcharging of foreigners on rides is the usual annoyance, so agree prices first. Keep cash split in a few pockets.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

Pendembu is worth a stop if you like old railways and rural life, but it is a short visit rather than a destination. The disused railway station and the market fill a half day, and it sits on the road between Kenema, about 1.5 to 2.5 hours away, and Kailahun. Rooms cost around US$8 to 20.
Pendembu needs one night, or two if you add a day outing. Half a day covers the station and market, and the second day suits a motorbike trip to nearby villages or toward Gola forest, costing US$10 to 20 for the bike. Budget about US$42 a day.
Pendembu can be reached from Kenema in a day, but the shared vehicles take 1.5 to 2.5 hours each way and cost US$3 to 8. Leave by 7 or 8 am to get back before vehicles thin out. A night there gives more time and avoids the dusty rush on the road.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackSumming up the experience

Many travelers reach Pendembu late and arrive in the dark, then struggle to find a room or cash. Come in the morning, bring enough money from Kenema, and walk the old railway before the heat. I would also greet people first; it opens every conversation.
