Zeitz MOCAA is a contemporary art museum, not a colonial-era relic, and it sits inside a former grain silo, not a purpose-built gallery. You find it at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, South Africa. I walked in off the quay, looked up into the cut-away concrete tubes of the atrium, and stopped before I reached the ticket desk. The scale is the draw. Budget on the pricey side, expect weekend queues, and skip the gift shop. Spend your time in the atrium and on the rooftop sculpture garden. Unlike the nearby Iziko South African National Gallery, which hangs a historical canon, this museum focuses on living African artists.

Zeitz MOCAA is the largest museum in the world devoted to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora, and that focus is the reason to come. Most galleries on the continent show a few African artists inside a European story. Here the work of artists from Lagos, Nairobi, Johannesburg and beyond is the main event, which changes how you read the streets you walk afterward.

The building adds a second reason. Thomas Heatherwick’s atrium carved from 42 concrete grain tubes is architecture you can stand inside, and it works as a Cape Town milestone alongside Table Mountain. Plan about two to three hours for the galleries. That is enough to feel the range without museum fatigue, and the Waterfront setting makes the stop easy to fold into a day.
