Backpacking in Kalkuda
👀 For curious travelerstown ranked #24
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 6, 2026

Your feet squeak in the wet sand as a fishing skiff grinds up the shore, diesel and dried seaweed in the air, the sky turning that washed-out pink you only get after a hot, empty day. This is Kalkuda, on Sri Lanka’s quiet east coast just north of Passikudah, and it feels more like a working beach village than a resort. For backpackers, it’s a low-key base: cheaper, sleepier, and less polished than Passikudah, with the same long, swimmable bay but fewer bars and almost no nightlife. You’ll likely arrive by bus from Batticaloa or Trincomalee, then walk most places or flag a tuk-tuk along the single main road. It’s easy on the budget, mellow, and generally safe, but the social scene is thin; you come here to read, swim, and watch boats, not to party or café-hop.

  • Kalkudah Beach — A wide, sandy bay with shallow, calm water protected by a fringing reef; perfect for easy swimming, long walks, and quiet sunsets away from the bigger tourist crowds. The beach is the town’s defining spot and the best place to feel Kalkudah’s relaxed coastal rhythm.
  • Kalkudah Bay coral gardens / snorkeling spots — The reef-protected bay creates clear, shallow patches ideal for snorkeling right off the beach. Bring a mask or hire one locally and you’ll see reef fish and coral formations without needing a boat.
  • Early-morning fishing landing and fish market — Local boats land their catch at first light; watching the activity and buying ultra-fresh fish from vendors is a real, local experience that showcases Kalkudah’s fishing culture.

Nearby day trips worth doing are Pasikudah Bay (my personal favorite), Batticaloa Fort with its seaside ramparts, and the Kallady Bridge area famous for its local lagoon life and “singing fish.”

Compared to quieter residential zones, this neighborhood pulses with a raw, authentic vibe that’s both grounding and energizing. Staying here means you’re steps from markets, buses, and the kind of everyday scenes that turn a trip into a lived experience.

🚌 Getting aroundHow to get from A to B

Kalkuda moves at its own rhythm—less a clockwork town and more a place where time bends to the chatter of street vendors and the slow sway of palm fronds in the humid breeze. The sun hits hard by mid-morning, so mornings are your best bet for smooth travel before the heat and local traffic thicken into a slow crawl. The town’s pulse is a mix of laid-back locals and the occasional burst of market chaos, meaning you’ll want to blend patience with a bit of street-smart hustle to get around efficiently.

  • Local Buses: These run from early morning around 5:30 AM until about 7 PM. They’re dirt-cheap—just a few rupees—and cover routes to nearby towns. Expect basic comfort and a slow pace, but buses are the backbone of budget travel here.

  • Tuk-Tuks: Available all day and night, tuk-tuks offer quick hops around town or to nearby villages. Negotiate fares upfront; rides usually cost between 100-200 LKR depending on distance. They’re faster than buses but can get cramped and hot.

  • Shared Vans: For trips beyond Kalkuda, shared vans leave when full, typically from the main bus stand. They’re faster than buses and cost a bit more, but still budget-friendly. Timing is flexible but expect waits during off-peak hours.

👛 Costs (as of 27 November 2025)What things cost and how to budget

  • Basic Activities/Entry Fees: Kalkuda itself is more about soaking in the atmosphere than ticketed attractions. Visiting nearby beaches or wandering the lagoon edges is free. If you want to explore wildlife parks or temples in the region, budget around $5 to $10 for entry fees or guided tours.
  • Miscellaneous Expenses: Bottled water, snacks, and occasional treats like a fresh coconut or a local chai will add about $1 to $2 daily. Internet cafes or SIM cards for data are affordable, around $2 to $4 for decent coverage, keeping you connected without breaking the bank.

All told, you’re looking at a daily budget between $10 and $20 to cover the essentials in Kalkuda. This range lets you enjoy the slow rhythm of the town without cutting corners on comfort or flavor. The real win here is how the modest costs let you linger longer, soaking in the warm light and the gentle hum of everyday life by the water.
