Your feet squeak in the wet sand as a fishing skiff grinds up the shore, diesel and dried seaweed in the air, the sky turning that washed-out pink you only get after a hot, empty day. This is Kalkuda, on Sri Lanka’s quiet east coast just north of Passikudah, and it feels more like a working beach village than a resort. For backpackers, it’s a low-key base: cheaper, sleepier, and less polished than Passikudah, with the same long, swimmable bay but fewer bars and almost no nightlife. You’ll likely arrive by bus from Batticaloa or Trincomalee, then walk most places or flag a tuk-tuk along the single main road. It’s easy on the budget, mellow, and generally safe, but the social scene is thin; you come here to read, swim, and watch boats, not to party or café-hop.
