Backpacking in Kokkadicholai
👀 For curious travelerstown ranked #25
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 12, 2026

Kokkadicholai is not for anyone chasing rooftop bars, boutique hostels, or a neat row of smoothie bowls. It’s for backpackers who don’t mind rough edges if it means seeing real life up close. This small, mostly Tamil town sits inland from Batticaloa on Sri Lanka’s east coast, surrounded by lagoons, paddy fields, and shrines. It works best as a low-key base or day-trip from Batticaloa rather than a standalone stop: buses rattle through, guesthouses are basic, and evenings are quiet, more tea-shop chatter than traveler meetups. Costs are low, safety is generally fine if you stay aware and respect local sensitivities, and the payoff is a slower, more grounded slice of the east—less beachy than Passikudah, less polished than Batticaloa, but more intimate if you’re willing to lean into it.

  • Paddy-field circuit and village lanes — A short walk or bike ride around the town’s irrigation channels and rice paddies delivers a vivid rural experience: patchwork fields, water buffalo, small roadside shrines, and hands-on glimpses of how food is grown here.
  • Small-scale fish and roadside vendors — Vendor stalls toward the town edge sell lagoon and river fish alongside smoked and dried fish—useful for tasting regional flavors, practicing haggling, and experiencing local supply chains that feed nearby Batticaloa.
A few real, visitable highlights just outside Kokkadicholai that make excellent day trips are Batticaloa Fort and its waterfront, the Kallady Bridge and beach, and Pasikudah’s shallow sands — my personal favorite for a day out is the Kallady Bridge and beach.
