Backpacking in Leopards Hill Memorial Park
👀 For curious travelersattraction ranked #15
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

Walk in free, no ticket booth and no tour group in sight, which makes Leopards Hill Memorial Park one of the easiest quiet stops you can add to a day in Lusaka. It sits in Zambia’s capital, southeast of the city center, on the slopes of Leopards Hill. Expect almost no crowds and nothing to pay, but also no staged attractions. This is a working cemetery, so you go to wander, read headstones, and watch families visit. Look for the manicured lawns and the long views over the ridge. Unlike Embassy Park, the state burial ground for presidents, this is a private memorial park for ordinary Zambian families.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #15 attraction in Zambia
Reasons people choose to visit here

Leopards Hill Memorial Park shows you a side of Lusaka that no market or mall can: how Zambians remember their dead. The landscaped lawns and tree-lined paths make it one of the calmest green spaces in a loud, traffic-heavy capital, and the open ground along the hill gives you a long look across the city’s southeastern edge. Headstones in English and local languages, fresh flowers, and the ceremonies you might glimpse from a respectful distance tell you more about family and faith here than a museum label could. It pairs well with a morning of city sightseeing, since Leopards Hill Road leads into the greener, quieter suburbs.

💡 HighlightsMust-see experiences and standout moments

  1. The Memorial Lawns: Rows of graves sit on clipped grass instead of bare earth, which is unusual in Lusaka and gives the park a calm, park-like feel.
  2. Headstones and Inscriptions: Reading the epitaphs reveals names, languages and the phrases Zambian families choose, from scripture to short personal farewells.
  3. Views from the Hillside: The ground rises along Leopards Hill, and the higher paths open up wide views over bush, rooftops and the southeastern outskirts.
  4. Leopards Hill Road Drive: The approach road passes leafy residential areas and farms, a pleasant change from downtown traffic and a good way to see the city’s edge.
Leopards Hill Memorial Park needs about an hour for a respectful walk, or a little longer if you linger for the views.

We 💚 feedbackKey takeaways before you go

Leopards Hill Memorial Park works best as a quiet pause on a day that also takes in Lusaka’s markets and museums. I would pair it with a drive out along Leopards Hill Road, go in the morning when it is cool, and leave the camera pointed at the landscape.
