Backpacking in Mosi-oa-Tunya Cultural Village
👀 For curious travelersattraction ranked #14
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

Come for the drumming, dancing and a close look at how Tonga, Lozi and Bemba communities actually live, then stay for something most Falls visitors overlook: it’s the one place in Livingstone where you meet Zambian culture without a sales pitch. Mosi-oa-Tunya Cultural Village sits just outside Livingstone in southern Zambia. Entry is by guided tour because the houses are explained by people who live the customs, so follow your guide and ask freely. Unlike the craft markets nearer the Falls, this is a working demonstration village, not a place built to haggle.

Ranked #14 attraction in Zambia
What sets this place apart

Mosi-oa-Tunya Cultural Village gives you what the Victoria Falls rush cannot: context. After the roar of the water, spend an hour with guides who walk you through traditional homesteads and explain how different Zambian ethnic groups build, farm, marry and settle disputes. That matters on a route through Zambia, where you pass through so many regions without anyone explaining what you are looking at. It also helps your money land locally, since fees and craft sales go to the people running the village. Come here early in your Livingstone stay and the dances and the chief’s court will shape how you read everything else on the way north.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  1. Guided homestead tour: Walk between thatched huts while guides explain each ethnic group’s building style, kitchens and sleeping arrangements.
  2. Traditional dance and drumming: Live performances with big drums, rattles and costumed dancers. You are welcome to join in, and most people do.
  3. Chief’s court: A reconstruction showing how a traditional leader heard cases and what was expected of those who came before him.
  4. Traditional healer’s hut: Guides describe herbs, bones and rituals used in local healing, a window into belief rather than a show.
  5. Village cooking and food: See maize meal (nshima) prepared the old way and learn how it sits at the center of daily meals.
  6. Craft stalls: Carvings, baskets and beadwork made on site, with the maker usually standing next to the work.
  7. Storytelling and games: Short

Mosi-oa-Tunya Cultural Village charges an entry fee at the gate, and tours run on the spot, so booking ahead is only worthwhile for a larger group or a set performance time.

🌤️ When to go?Best time to visit Mosi-oa-Tunya Cultural Village

  • Cool Dry Season (May to August): Mornings sit around 8 to 12°C (46 to 54°F) and afternoons reach 24 to 27°C (75 to 81°F). Guided village tours run comfortably and the Falls are at their fullest spray-wise early in this window.
  • Hot Dry Season (September to November): Afternoons hit 32 to 38°C (90 to 100°F). Crowds thin and the Zambezi runs low.
  • Rainy Season (December to April): Warm, 25 to 31°C (77 to 88°F), with afternoon downpours. Dusty paths turn muddy, but prices drop.
Book the village visit for a morning slot, when it is cooler and tour groups have not arrived.

We 💚 feedbackParting advice and final tips

Mosi-oa-Tunya Cultural Village is easy to dismiss as a tour stop, but the small kitchen huts are where the best explanations happen. Linger there, ask about the food and daily routines, and bring small cash for a carving from the maker.
