Backpacking in National Gallery in Bulawayo
👌 Worth visitingattraction ranked #12
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

Entry is cheap and the galleries are compact, so you can see the whole place in an hour and still have your afternoon free. The National Gallery in Bulawayo sits in Zimbabwe’s second city, in a colonial-era building on Main Street near Eighth Avenue. Shona stone sculpture and Ndebele-influenced paintings deserve your time. The small shop earns a quick lap, but skip it if you’re short on cash. I started by asking the front desk which exhibition was newest, and that single question steered me to the best room. Do the same. Crowds are rare, the vibe is quiet and local. Spend your first morning here, then stroll the surrounding blocks for lunch.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #12 attraction in Zimbabwe
The unique appeal for travelers

The National Gallery in Bulawayo is the main public art space in the western half of Zimbabwe, and that gives it real weight. Its focus is Zimbabwean contemporary art, so you see how local painters and sculptors talk about land, identity and city life, rather than a souvenir version of it. The Bulawayo regional branch of the national gallery system also tends to foreground Matabeleland voices, which you won’t get from Harare’s larger scene. It is small and cheap, so the effort is minimal. On a route through the city it works well as a rainy-hour or midday break from the railway museum and the heat on Main Street, and it makes a quick cultural anchor before you head to Matobo or Hwange.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  1. Permanent collection rooms: Zimbabwean paintings and sculpture sit together, so you can compare styles from different regions in one pass.
  2. Stone sculpture displays: Smooth, dense carved pieces show the Shona tradition that made Zimbabwe famous in art circles worldwide.
  3. Rotating exhibitions: Shows change, often featuring young Bulawayo artists, so a return visit rarely repeats itself.
  4. Ndebele-influenced work: Look for bold geometric patterns and color that echo the painted house walls of Matabeleland.
  5. Gallery shop: Small works, prints and crafts by local artists, a better souvenir than anything from the street stalls.
  6. Historic building and Main Street setting: The colonial architecture is part of the experience, and the gallery sits within easy walking distance of other city sights.

The quiet suburbs of Suburbs and Hillside to the south suit travelers who want gardens, a calmer atmosphere and easier parking, though they are less social and need a short taxi ride in. Stick to the central streets in daylight and take a taxi after dark, which is standard advice for Bulawayo. The center also has the safest evening options for eating out.

The National Gallery in Bulawayo pairs well with a morning at the nearby railway museum and a long lunch on Main Street. I would walk it as the middle of a city day, then save the afternoon for a bus toward Matobo Hills.
