Reps Theatre is a working community playhouse run by volunteers, so the curtain goes up on amateur casts, not touring pros. It sits in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital, in the Avondale area, northwest of the city center. I once showed up on a Sunday assuming a matinee and found a locked foyer, a lesson in checking the program first. Go for the intimate main stage and the bar buzz afterward, skip it if no show is running, because the building alone is modest. Unlike the grander, more formal Harare Theatre, Reps feels like a neighbor’s living room with lights.
