The bungee cord hisses through its pulley and a scream drops away beneath your boots, then silence, then the low roar of the Zambezi pounding through the gorge. That sound is what I connect with this bridge. Victoria Falls Bridge spans the Batoka Gorge in the northwest of Zimbabwe, linking it to Zambia, and walking onto the span costs little while the views are huge. Skip the souvenir stalls near the border post and head straight for the middle, where spray drifts up from the Falls and trains rumble past. The bungee jump and bridge walk are pricey but earn it if you crave a rush; the border formalities are the dull part. Crowds thin out fast away from the jump platform. A good first day: stroll down from town, cross to the center of the span, watch a jump or two, then decide whether you are brave enough.

Victoria Falls Bridge is the best vantage point for seeing the gorge and the Falls spray together, and it costs far less than a helicopter flight. The single steel arch, with the border line marked at its center, makes it a rare place where you can stand in two countries in a few steps. Photos here look very different from the ones taken at the main Falls viewpoints, because you see the whole zigzag of the gorge below you.

The second reason is adrenaline. Here sits one of the most famous 111-meter bungee jumps in the world, and the guided bridge walk beneath the deck takes you along the girders for a very different perspective. If you want a milestone for a Zimbabwe route, this is it: easy to reach from town on foot, with history under your hands in the rivets and rails, and a chance to watch an old train cross at a crawl.
