Walk in during a rehearsal week or catch an evening show, and you get a grand French-built hall for the price of a modest ticket. National Theatre Mahieddine Bachtarzi stands in Algeria’s capital, on the edge of the Casbah and downtown Algiers, near the Tafourah area. The curved facade and gilded interior are the draw, along with plush seats and a rich echo. Performances are mostly in Arabic or French, so language limits the show itself. Algiers Centre, around Didouche Mourad Street and the Grande Poste, is the area to pick, since the theatre sits on the Tahar Boudjemaa square near the Casbah side of downtown. You can walk there in 10 to 20 minutes, and the Tafourah metro and tram are close. Streets stay busy with cafes and families into the evening, which makes solo arrivals easier. Hostels and budget guesthouses are few, so many travelers use small apartments or modest hotels. Bab El Oued is cheaper and lively but rougher late at night. Hussein Dey and El Harrach are cheaper still but farther out and less social.
