A Complete 2-Day Plan for Cook Islands

By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 23, 2026
This two-day plan is for first-timers on a stopover or a long weekend who want the best of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands without renting anything. The pace is easy on day one and active on day two, and the whole route runs on the round-island bus plus your own feet.

Days 1-2: Muri and the Cross-Island Trail

Base yourself in Muri for both nights. Its guesthouses, cafés and night food stalls sit along the island’s clearest lagoon, so the first day needs no transport at all. Swim and snorkel off Muri Beach in the morning, when the water is glassy and the trade winds have not yet picked up, then paddle a rented kayak out to the motu.

In the afternoon stroll to Avana Passage, the reef channel at Ngatangiia tied to the voyaging canoes that, by tradition, sailed to New Zealand. It takes 20 minutes to see and gives the beach day a backstory. Spend the evening at Te Vara Nui Village for drumming, dance and a buffet dinner, walking distance from most Muri beds.

On day two, catch an early bus to Avarua … read more 👉

On day two, catch an early bus to Avarua for coffee and a wander along the harbor, then head up the Avatiu valley road to start the Cross Island Walk. Expect 3 to 4 hours of steep, muddy climbing past the base of Te Rua Manga before the trail drops to the south coast road, where the bus takes you back to Muri for a final swim.

If you have a spare hour, snorkel the Aroa Marine Reserve on the southwest coast, a protected lagoon patch where fish crowd close to shore.

🙋 FAQFrequently Asked Questions

Yes, the Cook Islands are one of the easiest places in the Pacific to travel independently: English is spoken everywhere, crime is low and Rarotonga is small enough to learn in a day.

Rarotonga’s single 32 km coast road has buses running in both directions, and most hikes, beaches and cultural shows are reachable without a tour. The real hurdle is cost, not complexity. Dorm beds run about NZ$35 to 50 (US$20 to 30), and Aitutaki has almost no budget beds, so book Aitutaki stays and flights ahead. Cook more than you eat out, and shop at the Saturday Punanga Nui Market in Avarua.
Five days covers the Cook Islands well for most travelers: two or three on Rarotonga and two on Aitutaki.

With just 2 days, stay on Rarotonga and split it between Muri lagoon and the Cross Island Walk (3 to 4 hours). Three days lets you add an overnight on Aitutaki, a 50-minute flight away, for a lagoon cruise. A week or more opens up a quieter outer island such as Atiu, about 45 minutes from Rarotonga by plane. Flights between islands do not run every hour, so build in a buffer day before your international departure.
Yes, on Rarotonga in the Cook Islands you can manage without a car thanks to buses that circle the island clockwise and anticlockwise, roughly hourly in daytime.

A full loop takes about 50 minutes and a single fare is around NZ$5 to 6 (US$3 to 4), with day and multi-trip passes cheaper for heavy use. Evening and Sunday services are thinner, so check times before a late dinner. Bicycles rent for about NZ$10 to 20 a day and suit the flat coast road. On Aitutaki there are no regular buses, so rent a bike or scooter; lagoon cruises usually include hotel pickup.
The must-visits in the Cook Islands are the Aitutaki Lagoon, Muri Beach and the Cross Island Walk on Rarotonga.

Give the Aitutaki Lagoon a full-day cruise (about NZ$130 to 200, US$75 to 115) with stops at One Foot Island. Muri is the easiest base on Rarotonga, with kayaks to the motu and Te Vara Nui Village for an evening of dance and island food (budget NZ$120 to 150). The Cross Island Walk takes 3 to 4 hours past Te Rua Manga. Add Avana Passage at Ngatangiia for its voyaging history; it takes 20 minutes to see.
If time is short in the Cook Islands, skip the outer islands beyond Aitutaki and Rarotonga’s smaller sights such as Raemaru Lookout and the Cook Islands National Museum.

Raemaru is a steep 2 to 3 hour hike whose view overlaps with the Cross Island Walk, and the museum is small enough to drop without missing much. Atiu deserves at least 2 to 3 nights to justify the flight, so save it for a longer trip. Pick one cultural night, Te Vara Nui Village or Highland Paradise, rather than both. Do not skip Aitutaki, though; even one night there beats a rushed day tour.
Yes, our itinerary-planner does exactly that. Set your trip length in days, give your interests and travel style, optionally give start- and end location and/or some mandatory stops you would like to include and the itinerary planner creates your personalized routes for Cook Islands in seconds.
