French Guiana is doable independently, but it is one of the pricier and less connected places to backpack in South America, so plan ahead and budget more than you would in Suriname or Brazil.
The coastal road links
Cayenne,
Kourou and
Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, served by shared minibuses, and boats to the
Îles du Salut leave Kourou daily. Prices follow mainland France: expect €40 to 80 a night for a basic room, €15 to 25 for a restaurant meal, and the occasional hammock carbet for €10 to 20. Interior spots like
Saül need a flight, and reserves like Kaw are easiest with a guided tour. French helps a lot.
Five days covers the essential coast of French Guiana, while two or three days is enough for one region done well.
With 2 days, stay around
Kourou for the space center and a night on the
Îles du Salut. With 3 days, head east from
Cayenne to
Cacao and the Kaw marshes instead. Five days lets you run the whole western coast from Cayenne to
Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni (about 3 to 4 hours by road) and
Awala-Yalimapo. Add 3 or 4 days and a flight (around 40 minutes from Cayenne) if you want the deep forest around
Saül.
You can cover the main coastal towns of French Guiana without a car, but reaching nature reserves and smaller villages almost always means renting one or booking a tour.

Cayenne to
Kourou in about 1 hour for roughly €10 to 15, and to
Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni in 3 to 4 hours for about €40 to 50. They leave when full, mostly in the morning. Catamarans to the
Îles du Salut take about an hour.
Cacao, Kaw and
Awala-Yalimapo have little or no public service, so a rental car (around €35 to 60 a day) saves hours.
The
Îles du Salut are the one place in French Guiana nobody should miss, followed by the space center at Kourou and the turtle beaches of the far west.
Spend at least a day, ideally a night, on the islands (about €50 to 65 return by catamaran from
Kourou). Book the free
Centre Spatial Guyanais tour weeks ahead. In
Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, the
Camp de la Transportation completes the penal-colony story. Between April and July, leatherbacks nest at
Awala-Yalimapo, about 1 hour from Saint-Laurent. East of
Cayenne, the
Kaw-Roura Natural Reserve marshes are the best place for caimans and birds.
If time is short in French Guiana, skip the city beaches and the zoo and put those hours into the islands or the marshes.
Cayenne’s town beaches and
Kourou Beach have brown, sediment-heavy water and are fine for a sunset walk, not a planned day. The
Zoo de Guyane near Macouria is pleasant, but you will see the same species wild at Kaw. Cayenne itself needs only one night. Leave the interior (
Maripasoula,
Camopi, the Tumuc-Humac) for a trip of 10 days or more, because flights, permits and river transport add 2 to 4 days on their own.
