Marshall Islands in 3 Days

By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 23, 2026
This three-day route is for travelers who want to get out of the capital and see how outer-island life in the Marshall Islands actually runs, without committing to unreliable domestic flight schedules. It is slow and unhurried, with most of the time spent in one atoll village. You need shared taxis in Majuro and a small boat (or, if seas are rough, a short Air Marshall Islands hop) to Arno.

Day 1: Majuro’s history in one afternoon

Base yourself in Majuro for the first night and keep the day compact. On the way in from the airport, pause at the Peace Park Memorial, a seafront monument raised by Japanese veterans to the dead of the Pacific War, which is a quick and sobering stop. Then spend a couple of hours at the Alele Museum in Uliga, focusing on the sections about clan land, matrilineal inheritance and traditional voyaging. That background makes Arno far easier to understand, since land rights and family ties decide who you will stay with and where you can swim or fish. Use the evening … read more 👉

Then spend a couple of hours at the Alele Museum in Uliga, focusing on the sections about clan land, matrilineal inheritance and traditional voyaging. That background makes Arno far easier to understand, since land rights and family ties decide who you will stay with and where you can swim or fish. Use the evening to confirm your boat and your Arno lodging, and to buy small gifts and food supplies.

Days 2-3: Arno Atoll

Cross early to Arno Atoll, which sits just east of Majuro; the open-water boat ride takes roughly 1 to 2 hours depending on the swell. Arno feels like a different country from the capital: no traffic, coconut groves processed for copra, outrigger canoes pulled up on the lagoon beach, and a sky full of stars because there is barely any electric light. Spend two nights in a simple guesthouse or homestay, swim off the lagoon shore, and ask your hosts about going out with local fishermen, since Arno’s waters are well known among Majuro anglers for sportfishing. Dress modestly in the villages, with shorts to the knee and shoulders covered, and attend a Sunday church service if your timing allows. Boat back to Majuro on the morning after Day 3.

Ask your Arno hosts to take you to Ine, one of the atoll’s villages, where the lagoon shallows stretch far out at low tide.

🙋 FAQTraveler FAQ

Backpacking the Marshall Islands independently is straightforward on Majuro and harder everywhere else. English is widely spoken, the currency is the US dollar, and people are helpful, but there are no hostels and outer-island travel needs planning.

On Majuro, budget US$70 to 120 a night for a room, since cheaper options are rare. Shared taxis cost about US$1 a ride in town. Outer atolls like Arno or Jaluit mean arranging a boat or an Air Marshall Islands seat plus lodging with a local family or guesthouse before you go, and many atolls expect visitors to check in with the local council. Ebeye requires a pre-booked room because you transit a US Army base.
Three to five days covers the Marshall Islands’ main highlights for most travelers: Majuro plus one outer islet or atoll. A week or more only makes sense if you want remote atolls served by infrequent domestic flights.

Two days is enough for Majuro, the Alele Museum, the road west to Laura Beach (about 1 hour by car) and a boat day on Eneko. Add two nights for Arno Atoll, 1 to 2 hours away by boat, or two nights for Ebeye on Kwajalein, roughly an hour’s flight west. For Jaluit, Maloelap or Likiep, plan 7 to 10 days, because Air Marshall Islands flights may run only once or twice a week and cancellations are common.
Yes, you can get around the Marshall Islands without a car, and most visitors do. Shared taxis cover Majuro’s single main road, and boats and planes handle everything beyond it.

In the Majuro town area, shared taxis cost about US$1 a ride; reaching Laura at the western end takes around an hour and costs more, so negotiate or share. Boats from the Majuro docks reach Eneko in 30 to 45 minutes and Arno Atoll in 1 to 2 hours. For Kwajalein and Ebeye, take the United Island Hopper or an Air Marshall Islands flight, then the short ferry from the Kwajalein dock. Remote atolls rely on Air Marshall Islands’ limited schedule.
The must-visits in the Marshall Islands are Majuro’s Alele Museum and atoll road, a lagoon islet like Eneko, the village atoll of Arno, and Ebeye on Kwajalein Atoll. Together they show the country’s culture, its lagoons and its nuclear-era history.

Give Majuro at least two days: the Alele Museum for stick charts and old photographs, then the Majuro Island Walk to Laura Beach. Eneko is a 30 to 45 minute boat ride for snorkeling and quiet sand. Arno Atoll, 1 to 2 hours by boat, deserves two nights of village life. Ebeye, about an hour’s flight west, packs around 10,000 people onto a tiny islet beside the US Army base on Kwajalein.
If you are short on time in the Marshall Islands, skip the atolls that need charters or rare flights, especially Bikini, Rongelap and Ailinglaplap. They are fascinating, but each can eat a week of waiting.

Bikini Atoll and Rongelap Atoll require expensive private boats and permission from their local governments, so they rarely fit a short trip. Likiep, Jaluit and Maloelap depend on Air Marshall Islands flights that may run once or twice weekly. On Majuro, the Peace Park Memorial is a 20 minute stop near the airport rather than a destination. With 2 to 3 days, focus on Majuro, Eneko and Arno, all reachable within 2 hours.
Yes, our itinerary-planner does exactly that. Set your trip length in days, give your interests and travel style, optionally give start- and end location and/or some mandatory stops you would like to include and the itinerary planner creates your personalized routes for Marshall Islands in seconds.
