Backpacking in Khorixas
👀 For curious travelerstown ranked #18
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

Khorixas works as an overnight stop, not a destination, and what tips it is whether you need fuel, groceries and a bed before the gravel. It sits in the north of Namibia, in Damaraland, on the C39. The town is dusty, flat and low-key, with the smell of braai smoke at dusk and few other backpackers. Hitching and minibuses get you here, but the sights lie outside town, so a car matters. Fill the tank here, because stations further out are rare.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #18 town in Namibia
The unique appeal for travelers

Khorixas earns its place as the practical hub of Damaraland, the one town with a supermarket, banks, fuel and a rough-and-ready market within reach of the area's big sights. Most travelers stay one night, long enough to restock and sort out transport. Self-drivers and small groups get the most from it, since the Petrified Forest, Twyfelfontein and Burnt Mountain all lie a gravel drive away. Evenings are quiet, with a few bars and little nightlife. Slow travelers who like an unpolished, lived-in Namibian town will enjoy it more than anyone chasing hostel buzz.

💡 HighlightsKey sights and experiences for travelers

  1. Petrified Forest: Ancient tree trunks, some 30 meters long, lie scattered across red rock about 40 minutes west of town. Guides are compulsory and show you the Welwitschia plants, some of them centuries old. Go in the morning for cooler walking. Entry is about US$5 to 6, and the tour takes 1 hour.
  2. Khorixas Market and main street: The informal stalls sell fried snacks, airtime and fruit, and offer an easy way to chat with locals. Mornings are liveliest. Costs are small, and a stroll takes 30 to 45 minutes.
  3. Damara Living Museum: Reached by a short drive, it is run by local community members who demonstrate traditional crafts, fire-making and songs. It is best before midday. Expect about US$12 to 15 and 1.5 to 2 hours.
  4. Khorixas Rest Camp sundowner: The camp's grounds give a calm spot for a cold

  4. Khorixas Rest Camp sundowner: The camp's grounds give a calm spot for a cold drink in the evening light, with red hills in the distance. A drink costs around US$2 to 3, and an hour is enough.
  5. Local braai at a town shebeen: Grilled meat sold by the portion is the standard evening meal, and you eat it with neighbors. Budget about US$4 to 7 and 1 hour.
Khorixas also makes a sensible base for day trips to Twyfelfontein rock engravings, Burnt Mountain and the Organ Pipes, and the Petrified Forest is the best first stop.

🏘️ NeighborhoodsKey areas and districts to know

Khorixas is small, so its areas are really a few clusters along one main road, and you cover all of them in an afternoon. Distances look short but the sun is fierce, so walk early and late and rest at midday.
  • Main road and shopping strip: Fuel stations, a supermarket, a bank with ATMs and butchers whose braai smoke drifts across the tarmac. This is where you stock up, because the next real shops are hours away by gravel. Dust coats everything, so keep your pack zipped.
  • Craft stalls near the center: Carvers and sellers of beaded jewelry set up under thin shade. Prices are negotiable, so bargain gently and buy directly from the maker.
  • Residential Khorixas: Low houses, goats on the verges, shebeens thumping music after dark. Daytime walking is relaxed, but after dark take a taxi, since streetlights are sparse.

⌛️ 1 dayHow to make the most of one day

8:00 AM, Khorixas Market: Buy bread, fruit and water, then fill the tank before leaving town. Chat with the stallholders and watch the morning trade pick up.
9:30 AM, Petrified Forest: Drive west on the C39 and take the guided walk among the fallen trunks and the old Welwitschia plants. The guide explains how the logs were carried here by floodwater.
12:00 PM, Picnic stop: Eat in the shade of a camelthorn tree beside the road, because few cafés exist along this stretch.
1:30 PM, Damara Living Museum: Spend two hours with community guides learning traditional skills, which is less visited than the big rock art sites.
5:00 PM, Khorixas Rest Camp: Return for a cold drink as the hills glow, then finish with a braai in town.

🌤️ When to go?Weather, crowds, and seasonal trade-offs

Khorixas is most comfortable from May to September, when days reach 24 to 30°C (75 to 86°F) and nights drop to 8 to 12°C (46 to 54°F).
  • Cool dry season (May to Sept): Crisp mornings, long clear days, busiest lodges and the highest tour prices.
  • Hot season (Oct to Dec): Highs of 34 to 38°C (93 to 100°F), little shade, and quieter roads.
  • Rains (Jan to Apr): Brief afternoon storms, green hills, and dry riverbeds that can flood roads. Lodges often discount rooms.

🛏️ Where to stay?Best areas and accommodation options

Stay in or right beside Khorixas itself, along the main road, for the easiest budget beds. Options are a handful of guesthouses, camps with tent pitches and a few simple rooms, with dorm-style beds rare and prices typically US$15 to 35. The center is quiet at night, and sleeping near the fuel stations makes early departures simple, though trucks pass at dawn. For more atmosphere, camps toward Twyfelfontein, 60 to 90 km away, offer shaded campsites around US$10 to 15 per person under a huge night sky. They need your own vehicle, and nights there are very dark and silent.

🚌 Getting aroundHow to get from A to B

Khorixas is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes, but the sights that matter sit 40 to 100 km away, so on-foot travel stops at the edge of town. Public transport is thin, with few set schedules, so plan around the sun and the road.
  • Walking: Free and fine for the main strip, but midday heat is brutal and shade is rare. Go before 10 am or after 4 pm.
  • Local taxis: Shared or private cars cover town hops for about US$1 to 3. Agree the fare before you get in, because meters are not used.
  • Minibuses and shared cars: Connections run on the main tar road toward Outjo, Kamanjab and Uis, usually US$8 to 20 per seat. They leave when full, so arrive early in the morning and expect a wait of an hour or more.
  • Hitchhiking: Common on the tar road and generally done with a small payment to the driver. Traffic

  • Hitchhiking: Common on the tar road and generally done with a small payment to the driver. Traffic is sparse, so carry water and a hat.
  • Rental car: The most practical way to reach the area’s sights, from roughly US$50 to 90 a day with a 4x4 option. Gravel roads are corrugated and rattle everything loose, so lower tire pressure slightly and keep a spare.

👛 Costs (as of 22 October 2026)Money, prices, and spending tips

Khorixas costs roughly US$51 to 85 a day for a backpacker, once you add a rental car split between travelers.
CategoryBudget RangeLocal Reality
Dorm/budget accommodationUS$15 to 25Few true dorms, so expect a campsite or simple guesthouse room.
MealsUS$10 to 18Self-catering from the supermarket or grilled meat plates at local spots.
Local transportUS$15 to 25Fuel and shared car costs, as sights are spread out.
Activities/entry feesUS$8 to 12Guided site entries are charged per person.
MiscellaneousUS$3 to 5Water, snacks, airtime and small craft purchases.
Total Daily BudgetUS$51 to 85Around US$65 for a typical day.
Buy groceries and water in Khorixas before heading out, because prices at remote camps run noticeably higher. Pay in Namibian dollars or South African rand where accepted.
⚠️ Prices can change and everyone travels differently, so take this as a rough guide. Hope it helps you plan your adventure!

🚌 Day tripsEasy escapes and nearby places

Khorixas works well as a base for day trips if you have a car, and poorly without one, since the main sights are 40 to 100 km away on gravel.
Twyfelfontein: Ancient rock engravings on red sandstone, reached in about 1.5 hours by road. Entry plus a required guide runs around US$8 to 12, and fuel adds roughly US$15 to 20. Go in the cooler months and start early before the rock turns hot.
👉 Explore Twyfelfontein
Petrified Forest: Fossil tree trunks lie scattered on open ground, about 40 minutes away. A guide is compulsory, at around US$5 to 8. Many first-timers wander off alone, which is not allowed.

Burnt Mountain and Organ Pipes: Dolerite columns and a hill that glows in low light, close to Twyfelfontein, so combine them in one long loop of about 2 hours each way. Entry is cheap, under US$5.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

Khorixas is broadly safe, and the usual care is enough. Keep phones and cash out of sight around the main strip and fuel stations, and take a taxi rather than walking the dark side streets at night. Solo travelers rarely face problems, but the real hazards are the roads. Drive in daylight, because cattle, goats and donkeys wander onto the tarmac. Craft sellers can be persistent but friendly, and a polite no works. Tell someone your route before heading onto remote gravel, as phone signal drops out quickly.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

Khorixas is worth visiting mainly as a base, not a destination, since the area holds Twyfelfontein’s rock engravings (about 1.5 hours away) and the Petrified Forest (about 40 minutes). The town itself offers fuel, an ATM and supplies. Skip it if you have no vehicle.
Two days is enough for Khorixas as a base, one for Twyfelfontein and Organ Pipes and one for the Petrified Forest. Add a third day if you want slow mornings or continue toward Damaraland camps. Guided entries cost roughly US$5 to 12 each.
Khorixas is rarely done as a day trip from a city, because Windhoek is about 5.5 to 6 hours away by road, and Swakopmund roughly 4 hours. It makes more sense as an overnight stop. A day trip from Outjo (about 1.5 hours) is possible with a rental car.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackParting advice and final tips

Khorixas pairs best with Twyfelfontein and the Brandberg on one loop through Damaraland, with Etosha to the north or Swakopmund to the south. I would arrive with a full tank and leave early, because the best light is out on the gravel.
