Huye suits travelers who like their history in museums and their evenings quiet: students of Rwandan culture, people building a southern loop, and anyone who wants a university town without capital-city traffic. It is less satisfying if you need nightlife, big-ticket adventure or a long list of sights, because the town is small and the good things can be seen in a day or two. Huye sits in the south of Rwanda, in the hills of the Southern Province, and was long known as Butare, the country’s intellectual center. The Ethnographic Museum is the one stop I would not skip, and the arboretum nearby is a calm place to walk. The genocide memorial at Ngoma is sobering and deserves unhurried time. The wide, tidy streets mean little to see beyond the main sites. Carry some cash before you arrive, since card machines and ATMs can be unreliable outside the central streets.
