Most people end up in Waterloo because the road to the Peninsula beaches and the road east to the provinces both pass through it, and that crossroads is the overlooked point: it is the Freetown area’s great transit junction, a sprawl of market stalls, minibus engines and roadside charcoal smoke in Sierra Leone’s Western Area Rural District, east of the capital. The air is hot, diesel-heavy and loud with horns and touts. That is because every vehicle heading up-country loads here, so an experienced traveler arrives early, when seats fill fastest, and keeps small notes ready for the shared taxi fare. Accommodation is thin, so most backpackers sleep in Freetown and treat Waterloo as a transfer point. Evenings are quiet, with little hostel life and few other travelers. Waterloo is best early in the morning, when the junction wakes up, vans rattle, and the market smells of fresh bread and wet earth. Come in the dry months for easier walking, and leave before dusk. I would carry small notes and a bottle of water, and skip staying overnight.
