Backpacking in Mokpo
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 5, 2026

You land in Mokpo and face a core decision: burn time and money chasing distant islands…or stay city-side and go deep on harbor life, museums, and food. That choice shapes your whole visit. Mokpo sits on Korea’s southwest coast, below Gwangju, where ferries fan out into the Yellow Sea. For backpackers it’s cheap, safe, and low-key, with the modern maritime museum, Yudalsan’s coastal views, and raw fish alleys instead of big-city nightlife. Fewer hostels and travelers than Busan or Yeosu, but more real daily life.

🚌 Getting aroundHow to get from A to B

Mokpo moves at its own rhythm—neither frantic nor sluggish. It’s a city where the tide of people ebbs and flows with the ferry schedules and market hours, but the streets themselves pulse with a relaxed, almost intuitive pace. You won’t find a rigid timetable stamped on every corner, but the city’s transport system balances predictability with enough wiggle room to keep you on your toes. Understanding this flow means you’re not just getting from A to B; you’re playing the city’s game, knowing when to sprint and when to coast.

  • Walking: Mokpo’s compact downtown makes walking your best bet for short hops. It’s free, flexible, and lets you soak in the city’s salt-tinged air and street chatter. Expect 10-20 minutes between major spots.

  • Local Transport: Single bus or taxi rides within Mokpo typically range from $1 to $2. The city is compact, so you won’t need many rides, but occasional taxis for convenience or late nights add up.
  • City Transport Pass: A reloadable T-money card or similar costs about $3 to $5 initially, with daily top-ups of $3 to $5 covering unlimited bus and subway rides, making it a smart buy for active days.
  • Basic Activities/Entry Fees: Museums, parks, and cultural sites generally charge between $2 and $5. Mokpo’s attractions are affordable, with many outdoor or public spaces free or very low cost.
  • Miscellaneous Expenses: Think snacks, bottled water, occasional coffee, or small souvenirs—budget around $3 to $7 daily. These small costs add flavor to your day but rarely break the bank.

Altogether, you’re looking at a daily budget ranging from about $25 on a tight, off-season plan to $50 if you lean into a bit more comfort and activity. This range lets you decide how much time and money you want to invest in convenience versus stretching your experience further. Mokpo rewards those who balance these elements thoughtfully.

Dadohaehaesang National Park
A bit further afield, this national park is a treasure trove of natural beauty. With hiking trails that lead to stunning coastal views, it’s a paradise for nature lovers. Expect about an hour and a half of travel time, and plan for a budget of around 15,000 KRW for transportation and park fees. Late spring is ideal for wildflowers, but be mindful of the weather; it can get windy. Many backpackers miss the less-traveled trails, which offer a more intimate experience.

Gwangju
Just an hour away by bus, Gwangju is a vibrant city steeped in history and culture. Visit the 5.18 Memorial Park to learn about the Gwangju Uprising, then dive into the local food scene with some bibimbap or tteokgalbi. A round-trip bus ticket will set you back about 10,000 KRW. The best time to visit is during the Gwangju Biennale in the fall, but avoid weekends if you can; the city can get crowded. Many travelers overlook the art galleries tucked away in the alleys, which are worth the detour.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

Mokpo is generally safe, but like any city, a little awareness goes a long way. Stick to well-lit areas at night, especially near the waterfront, where the atmosphere can shift. Solo travelers should trust their instincts; if something feels off, it probably is.

Scams are rare, but be cautious around overly friendly locals offering unsolicited help. They might expect something in return. Everyday annoyances include the occasional language barrier; a smile and a translation app can bridge that gap. Keep your belongings secure, and you’ll navigate Mokpo like a pro.
