A Complete 10-Day Plan for Czechia

By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 5, 2026
This 10-day route is for travelers who want a balanced mix of big-city culture, medieval towns, and one serious nature hit, moving mostly by train with a couple of easy bus links. The pace is steady rather than frantic: you’ll change bases a few times, but each stop gets at least two nights so you can unpack mentally as well as physically.

Days 1-3: Prague Foundations & Jewish Quarter

Start with three nights in Prague to give the capital the time it actually needs instead of trying to cram it into a weekend. Spend one full day around the Prague Castle Complex and nearby neighborhoods, another day weaving through the Old Town and the Old Jewish Cemetery and Jewish Museum in Prague, and a flexible third day to follow your curiosity—maybe revisiting a favorite café, catching a performance at the National Theatre, or ducking into the Klementinum and Baroque Library Hall if you want a hit of ornate bookish grandeur.

Days 4-5: Bohemian Switzerland & Pravčická brána

Days 4-5: Bohemian Switzerland & Pravčická brána

Trade city streets for sandstone cliffs by heading north to Bohemian Switzerland National Park, using a train to Děčín and a short bus or local connection into the park area. Base yourself with two nights focused on hiking to Pravčická brána, where the rock arch and surrounding viewpoints give you that “this is why I left the office” feeling without requiring hardcore mountaineering skills; the extra night lets you choose between a second, shorter hike or a lazy riverside day depending on how your legs feel.

Days 6-7: Medieval Silver Town & Bone Church

Head back south by train to the historic town of Kutná Hora, which makes a great two-night base instead of a rushed day trip. Use one day for the atmospheric streets and churches of the town itself, and another for the Kutná Hora Bone Church, where the chandelier of skulls and carefully arranged bones are both eerie and oddly peaceful when you’re not sprinting through with a tour group.

Days 8-10: South Bohemia - České Budějovice & Český Krumlov

Continue by train to České Budějovice for three nights, using this easygoing regional city as your launchpad into South Bohemia. Dedicate one full day to the fairy-tale lanes and riverside views of Krumlov Castle and Baroque Theatre in nearby Český Krumlov (an effortless day trip by bus or train), and another to exploring České Budějovice’s main square and breweries at a relaxed pace; the extra night keeps the end of your trip from turning into a frantic dash back to Prague.

My standout memory from this route is hiking back from Pravčická brána tired and dusty, then sitting on a quiet platform waiting for the little local train that would trundle me back toward Prague and “civilization.”

🙋 FAQFrequently Asked Questions

Czechia is very easy to backpack independently, even for a first big trip. Trains and buses are frequent, towns are compact, and you can usually find a cheap guesthouse, hostel, or simple pension near the station. English is common in Prague and bigger towns, but even in smaller places you can get by with a few phrases, a map app, and a smile. It’s a low-stress country to navigate, with good safety, clear signage, and prices that are friendly if you avoid the most touristy bars and souvenir zones.
If you only have 3–4 days, focus on Prague with maybe one day trip and accept that you’re just getting a teaser. With about 7–10 days, you can do a classic loop: Prague, a smaller historic town like Český Krumlov or Telč, and a nature stop such as Bohemian Switzerland or the Bohemian Paradise. Two weeks lets you slow down, add Brno and Olomouc, and actually enjoy cafés, pubs, and hikes instead of sprinting between photo stops.
You can easily get around Czechia without a car; in fact, for backpackers it’s usually better. Trains connect most cities and many small towns, and where trains don’t go, regional buses fill the gaps, often dropping you right in the main square. Tickets are cheap by Western European standards, you rarely need to book far ahead except on peak holiday weekends, and stations are walkable to the center in most places, so you save money and hassle compared with driving and parking.
If it’s your first time, Prague is non‑negotiable: walk the Old Town, cross Charles Bridge early or late, and climb up to the castle area for views and backstreets. Beyond that, aim for at least one smaller historic town such as Český Krumlov, Telč, or Kutná Hora to see how different Czechia feels once you leave the capital. For nature, Bohemian Switzerland or Bohemian Paradise give you sandstone cliffs, forest trails, and viewpoints that balance out all the cobblestones and beer halls.
If you’re short on time, skip trying to see every castle and every spa town; after the first couple, they blur together and eat up travel days. You can also skip long detours to minor villages just because they’re on some “most charming towns” list; focus instead on one or two well‑connected bases and do short day trips. In Prague, you can safely skip overpriced river cruises and gimmicky medieval‑themed dinners and put that money into a good local pub meal or an extra night in a smaller town instead.
Yes, our itinerary-planner does exactly that. Set your trip length in days, give your interests and travel style, optionally give start- and end location and/or some mandatory stops you would like to include and the itinerary planner creates your personalized routes for Czechia in seconds.
