A Complete 3-Day Plan for Fiji

By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 20, 2026
This three-day route is for travelers who want to see Fiji’s main island beyond the airport strip, mixing beaches with walking and some history. The pace is easygoing, with two nights in one place on the Coral Coast and short day trips from there. Local and express buses along the Queens Road do most of the work, with taxis or half-day tours for the inland stops.

Day 1: Natadola Beach and the Sigatoka Sand Dunes

Leave Nadi in the morning on a Queens Road bus heading south and break the journey at Natadola Beach for a swim in its deep, reef-sheltered water. Keep it to a couple of hours, then continue to the Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park, about 75 minutes from Nadi in total. The visitor center sits right on the highway west of Sigatoka town, so buses drop you at the gate. A loop walk of 1 to 2 hours climbs through casuarina forest onto dunes up to around 60 meters high, then drops to a wild, wave-pounded beach where pottery shards and human remains thousands of years old have been uncovered. … read more 👉

Go late in the day when the sand is cooler, and carry water. Finish at a guesthouse or backpacker resort on the Coral Coast Beaches around Korotogo, a ten-minute ride east.

Days 2-3: Coral Coast, Naihehe Caves and Tavuni Hill Fort

Use Day 2 for the Sigatoka Valley, the farming heartland locals call Fiji’s “salad bowl”. Half-day tours from Sigatoka or the Coral Coast head upriver to the Naihehe Caves, a limestone cave system that served as a refuge and fortress for hill tribes during 19th-century warfare. A local guide leads you through narrow, bat-filled passages to the chamber where the priest once held ceremonies, and you crawl through a gap to get there, so wear shoes you can get muddy. In the afternoon, take a short taxi to Tavuni Hill Fort, about 4 kilometers from Sigatoka town, a ridge-top fortification built in the 18th century by a Tongan chief, with terraces, a ceremonial ground and wide views over the river bends and cane fields. On Day 3, keep the morning for snorkeling the lagoon along the Coral Coast, where the reef sits close to shore at high tide, then ride the bus back to Nadi in about 1.5 hours.

With an extra half day, take the guided village walk to Biausevu Waterfall, inland from Korolevu, where a forest trail ends at a plunge pool you can swim in.

🙋 FAQBackpacking FAQ

Yes, Fiji is one of the easiest Pacific countries to backpack on your own, because English is an official language, buses cover the main island and a hop-on ferry pass links the outer islands.

Most travelers start at Nadi, where Wailoaloa Beach hostels charge FJ$30 to 50 (US$13 to 22) for a dorm. Local buses along the Queens Road reach Sigatoka in about 1.5 hours and Suva in 4 to 5 hours. The Yasawa Flyer from Port Denarau serves the Yasawa Islands, where budget resorts with compulsory meal plans run FJ$100 to 180 a night. Villages expect a kava gift and modest dress, which is easy to manage once you know.
For Fiji, 10 to 14 days is the best length for a backpacker, enough to combine Viti Levu with the Yasawas and one far-flung island.

Give Nadi and the Coral Coast 3 to 4 days, the Yasawa Islands 4 to 5 days (the ferry takes up to 5 hours to the northern islands), and a highland village like Navala one night. Adding Taveuni or Savusavu means a domestic flight of about 1 to 1.5 hours from Nadi, so allow at least 3 days there. With only 5 days, stick to Nadi, Navala and the Yasawas.
Yes, you can travel all of Fiji without a car, using buses on the two big islands, ferries between islands and short domestic flights.

On Viti Levu, express and local buses run the Queens Road from Nadi to Suva in 4 to 5 hours for around FJ$15 to 25 (US$7 to 11), stopping at Sigatoka and the Coral Coast. The Yasawa Flyer leaves Port Denarau daily around 8:30 am for the Yasawa Islands. Carriers (shared trucks) reach villages like Navala from Ba, and taxis are metered or fixed-fare and inexpensive for short hops. Flights or the overnight ferry from Suva connect Savusavu and Taveuni.
The must-visits in Fiji are the Yasawa Islands for beaches and snorkeling, and Navala Village for a look at traditional highland life.

In the Yasawas, ride the ferry 4.5 to 5 hours north to reach the Sawa-i-Lau Caves, where you swim through limestone chambers. Navala sits 1.5 to 2 hours above Ba by bus on a dirt road, with around 200 thatched bure and an entry fee of about FJ$25 (US$11). On the main island, Natadola Beach and the Sigatoka Sand Dunes are both easy day trips from Nadi. With more time, fly to Taveuni for the Tavoro Waterfalls in Bouma National Heritage Park.
If time is short in Fiji, skip Suva and the far east islands, and focus on the Nadi side of Viti Levu plus the Yasawas.

Suva is 4 to 5 hours by bus from Nadi, and its malls, such as the TappooCity precinct, add little for a short trip, though the Fiji Museum is good if you pass through. Levuka, Kioa Island and Qamea Island each need extra flights or boats and at least 2 to 3 days to justify. The Arts Village at Pacific Harbour is a staged show you can drop in favor of a real night in Navala Village.
Yes, our itinerary-planner does exactly that. Set your trip length in days, give your interests and travel style, optionally give start- and end location and/or some mandatory stops you would like to include and the itinerary planner creates your personalized routes for Fiji in seconds.
