2 Days in Luxembourg

By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 18, 2026
This two-day trip is for travelers with a long weekend who want Luxembourg at its most outdoorsy rather than its most official. It is a hiking weekend at a steady but unhurried pace, based in one town so you unpack once. A single bus ride of about an hour from the capital gets you there, and local regional buses handle the rest, free like all public transport in the country.

Day 1: Echternach

Make Echternach your base for both nights. It is the oldest town in Luxembourg, it sits right on the German border along the Sûre, and it puts you at the trailhead without any further transfers. Arrive by midday, drop your bag and head to the Abbey of Echternach: the basilica above Willibrord’s crypt and the abbey’s museum of illuminated manuscripts give the town its story in an hour or two. Late afternoon, walk the Echternach Lake Loop, a flat circuit of about 4 kilometers around the reservoir just southwest of town, good for stretching your legs before the big day.

Day 2: Mëllerdall and Berdorf

Day 2: Mëllerdall and Berdorf

Day 2 is why you came. The Mëllerdall region packs sandstone towers, ferns and narrow rock passages into a compact area, and the Mullerthal Trail strings them together. Leave Echternach on the trail’s first route and walk the 3 to 4 hours to Berdorf, the plateau village surrounded by climbing walls and gorges with names like the Huel Lee. Eat in Berdorf, then either walk back through the woods or catch one of the regular buses down to Echternach. With an early start, you still have time to sit by the river with a local beer before the evening.

For a quieter detour, the Heringer Millen, a restored watermill near Müllerthal village, makes a good coffee stop.

🙋 FAQTraveler FAQ

Yes, Luxembourg is one of the easiest countries in Europe to backpack on your own: it is compact, very safe, English is widely spoken, and all public transport is free.

The country stretches only about 82 kilometers north to south, so no ride from Luxembourg City takes much more than 75 minutes. Youth hostels in the capital, Echternach, Vianden and Larochette charge roughly €32 to 48 for a dorm bed, and trails such as the Mullerthal Trail are clearly waymarked. The challenge is cost, not logistics: plan on €60 to 95 a day with hostels and simple meals.
Three to five days covers Luxembourg well; two days is enough for one region, and five lets you see the capital, the Moselle, the Mëllerdall and the north without rushing.

With 2 days, base yourself in Echternach and hike the Mullerthal Trail. With 3 days, pair Luxembourg City with Vianden and Clervaux. With 5 days, add a Moselle wine day to Remich and Schengen and two nights in Echternach. Distances are short (the capital to Echternach is about 1 hour by bus, to Clervaux about 1 hour by train), so every extra day goes to sightseeing rather than transit.
Yes, getting around Luxembourg without a car is easy, because buses, trains and trams are free nationwide in second class and reach every major sight.

From Luxembourg City, trains reach Clervaux in about 1 hour and Ettelbruck in about 30 minutes, where buses continue to Vianden (another 30 minutes). Buses run to Echternach in about 1 hour and to Remich on the Moselle in 40 to 50 minutes. Rural lines in the Mëllerdall and the north thin out in the evenings and on Sundays, so check the last departure before setting off on a long hike.
The must-visits in Luxembourg are the capital’s fortress old town, the sandstone gorges of the Mëllerdall, Vianden Castle and the Moselle wine villages.

In Luxembourg City, give a full day to the Bock Casemates, the Grand Ducal Palace and the lower quarter of Grund. The Mullerthal Trail out of Echternach deserves at least one day of walking, with the Echternach to Berdorf section (3 to 4 hours) the best introduction. Vianden Castle needs about 2 hours, and a day trip to Remich and Schengen, under an hour from the capital by bus, covers the Moselle.
If you are short on time in Luxembourg, skip the indoor museums in the capital and the Upper Sûre lake area, and spend your hours on the casemates, the Mëllerdall and Vianden instead.

The Luxembourg City History Museum and Mudam are good rainy-day options but can wait for a return trip. The Upper Sûre reservoir is best for a summer swim day and sits off the main rail line, adding 1 to 1.5 hours each way. In the north, choose either Vianden or Clervaux rather than both, and treat Larochette and Beaufort Castle as extras for a second day in the east.
Yes, our itinerary-planner does exactly that. Set your trip length in days, give your interests and travel style, optionally give start- and end location and/or some mandatory stops you would like to include and the itinerary planner creates your personalized routes for Luxembourg in seconds. Try it out!
