Most people online reduce Schiedam to “that gin place near Rotterdam,” but the surprise is how quiet and small‑town it feels for somewhere ringed by giant windmills and industry. Tucked just west of Rotterdam in The Netherlands, it’s more side‑quest than headline act for backpackers. The compact old center, canals, and world‑record‑tall windmills are genuinely atmospheric, but nightlife is low‑key and hostels are scarce, so it skews toward slow evenings and budget guesthouses. Trains and trams make it an easy, cheap hop from Rotterdam or The Hague, and you can walk almost everything once you’re there. It’s safer and calmer than Rotterdam, less pretty than Delft, and works best as a half‑day or overnight stop to taste jenever, wander the streets, and then move on.
