How to Spend 2 Days in Lesotho

By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 23, 2026
This two-day route is for first-timers to Lesotho, weekend visitors crossing from Bloemfontein or anyone squeezing the country into a South Africa trip. It stays in the western lowlands around the capital, so the pace is relaxed and no single ride lasts more than an hour. Minibus taxis from Maseru’s ranks cover every leg, and a shared 4+1 taxi handles any short hop in town.

Day 1: Maseru and the Thaba Bosiu summit

Base yourself in Maseru for the single night, since everything on this route is a short ride out and back. After checking in, take a minibus 25 kilometers east to Thaba Bosiu and hire a guide at the Thaba Bosiu Cultural Village for the climb up the plateau, a steep 30 to 45 minutes on a rock path. On top you walk past the graves of Moshoeshoe I and his family, the ruins of his settlement and the cliff edges where defenders rolled boulders onto attackers. The Boers and the British both tried to take the mountain in the 19th century and neither managed it. Come down before sunset … read more 👉

Day 2: Morija Museum & Archives

Head 45 kilometers south to Morija, about an hour by minibus, where French missionaries arrived in 1833 and set up the country’s first mission station. The Morija Museum & Archives fills in what Thaba Bosiu leaves out: dinosaur bones from the surrounding hills, Basotho household objects and records of the mission’s early printing press. Two hours inside is plenty, followed by a walk around the old stone church and mission buildings before you return to Maseru for an evening departure.

For a bonus half day, the San rock paintings at Ha Baroana, east of Maseru near Nazareth, show eland and hunters painted on a sandstone overhang above a quiet river gorge.

🙋 FAQGood to Know

Yes, Lesotho is easy to backpack independently as long as you are fine with minibus taxis and early starts, and English is an official language, so asking for the right vehicle is simple.

Most trips begin in Maseru, where minibuses leave for Semonkong (3 to 4 hours, roughly M60 to 90, about US$3.50 to 5), Malealea (2.5 to 3 hours with a change at Motsekuoa) and Butha-Buthe (2 to 3 hours). Mountain lodges offer dorms or camping for about M150 to 350 (US$8 to 20). Departures into the highlands thin out after midday, so leave in the morning and carry cash, since ATMs exist only in the bigger towns.
Five to seven days in Lesotho lets you combine the lowland history sites with one or two mountain areas, while two or three days fits a single region comfortably.

With 2 days, stay in Maseru and visit Thaba Bosiu and the Morija Museum & Archives, each under an hour away. With 3 days, spend two nights in Semonkong for Maletsunyane Falls, 3 to 4 hours from the capital. Five days covers a northern loop through Ts’ehlanyane National Park and Katse Dam. Ten days or more lets you add a multi-day pony trek from Malealea or the remote Sehlabathebe National Park in the far south-east.
Yes, you can get around Lesotho without a car, because minibus taxis and a handful of larger buses link every district town with Maseru every day.

Typical rides from Maseru: Butha-Buthe in 2 to 3 hours, Semonkong in 3 to 4 hours, and Katse Dam in 5 to 6 hours with a change in Hlotse. Fares run roughly M40 to 120 (US$2 to 7) per leg. The hardest places to reach are Sehlabathebe National Park, where a slow bus from Qacha’s Nek takes most of a day, and Sani Pass, which most travelers cross on a shared 4x4 tour from Underberg in South Africa.
The must-visits in Lesotho are Maletsunyane Falls at Semonkong, the plateau fortress of Thaba Bosiu and the mountain village of Malealea.

Maletsunyane drops about 190 meters into a gorge, and two nights in Semonkong give you time to hike to its base. Thaba Bosiu, 25 kilometers from Maseru, holds the graves of Moshoeshoe I and works as a half-day trip. Malealea, 2.5 to 3 hours south of the capital, is the best base for pony treks of one to several days. With more time, add Ts’ehlanyane National Park for forest hiking and Katse Dam, reached over a pass of about 3,090 meters.
If you are short on time in Lesotho, skip extra days in Maseru, the Royal Palace and Sani Pass, and put those hours into the mountains instead.

The capital needs one night at most, and the palace can only be seen from outside its gates. Sani Pass sits on the far eastern border, a full day from Maseru, and is easier to visit as a 4x4 day tour from Underberg on the South African side. Liphofung Caves can go too if you are already seeing the cliff houses at Ha Kome, about an hour from Maseru. Sehlabathebe, a 1 to 2 day journey each way, is best left for a trip of ten days or more.
Yes, our itinerary-planner does exactly that. Set your trip length in days, give your interests and travel style, optionally give start- and end location and/or some mandatory stops you would like to include and the itinerary planner creates your personalized routes for Lesotho in seconds.
