How to Spend 7 Days in Kenya

By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 4, 2026
This 7-day route is for first-time Kenya travelers who want a concentrated hit of wildlife, culture, and a little hiking without racing across the whole country. You’ll move at a relaxed but full pace, using mostly road transfers from Nairobi with short hops out to nearby parks, relying on private shuttles or organized safari vehicles rather than long-distance buses.

Days 1-2: Nairobi - Urban wildlife and culture

Start in Nairobi so you can shake off the flight and dive straight into Kenya’s wild side without a long transfer. Base yourself in the city and spend a morning in Nairobi National Park, where you get that surreal combo of lions and giraffes with the city skyline in the background, which is the fastest way to feel, “Okay, I’m really in Kenya now.” Pair this with a visit to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Nursery to watch orphaned elephants barrel toward their bottles, and then head to the Giraffe Centre to get eye-level with Rothschild’s giraffes and learn what conservation … read more 👉

Base yourself in the city and spend a morning in Nairobi National Park, where you get that surreal combo of lions and giraffes with the city skyline in the background, which is the fastest way to feel, “Okay, I’m really in Kenya now.” Pair this with a visit to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Nursery to watch orphaned elephants barrel toward their bottles, and then head to the Giraffe Centre to get eye-level with Rothschild’s giraffes and learn what conservation looks like up close. Use a quieter afternoon at the Nairobi National Museum to get your bearings on Kenya’s history and cultures so the rest of the trip feels richer instead of just a blur of animals and landscapes.

Days 3-4: Naivasha & Hell’s Gate - Walking and cycling safari country

From Nairobi, head by road to Naivasha, your base for a couple of days of active exploring in the Rift Valley without brutal drive times. Spend a day in Hell’s Gate National Park, where you can cycle past zebra and gazelle instead of watching them from a vehicle, and then hike into Hell’s Gate Gorge for those steam vents and sculpted rock walls that feel like a natural obstacle course. With the extra time, add a half-day hike up Mount Longonot, a steep but manageable crater climb that rewards you with wide-open views over the Rift Valley and Lake Naivasha, giving you a big sense of scale without needing mountaineering skills.

Days 5-7: Lake Nakuru & Rift Valley lakes - Compact safari finale

Continue by road to Nakuru to keep the driving short but the scenery changing. Base yourself here to explore Lake Nakuru, where you can scan for rhinos, big cats, and huge flocks of birdlife along the soda lake shore, which gives you a classic safari experience without the longer haul to the Mara. Use your final day to sample more of the Kenya Lake System in the Great Rift Valley, focusing on viewpoints and lakeside time rather than rushing to a new region, so you end the week feeling like you actually lived in the Rift for a bit instead of just passing through.

As a final secret side quest, consider saving a future day for the quiet crater lakes around Elementaita, where you can walk along the shore with almost no one else around.

🙋 FAQBackpacking FAQ

Kenya is very doable to backpack independently if you’re comfortable with a bit of chaos and using public transport. Major routes between towns are covered by matatus (minibuses) and long-distance buses, hostels and simple guesthouses are common in Nairobi, the coast, and around big parks, and most people speak at least basic English, which makes logistics easier. The main things you need are patience for delays, a firm attitude when bargaining, and common-sense safety habits like avoiding walking at night in cities and using registered taxis or ride-hailing apps after dark.
If you want a solid taste of Kenya on a budget, aim for 10–14 days, which lets you do a short safari, some time on the coast, and a couple of days in Nairobi without sprinting. With 3 weeks you can slow down, use cheaper overland transport instead of flights, add places like the Rift Valley lakes or the central highlands, and keep daily costs lower by staying longer in each stop instead of hopping every two days.
You can absolutely get around Kenya without a car, and most backpackers do. Between cities and bigger towns you’ll rely on matatus, long-distance buses, and, on some routes, the Nairobi–Mombasa train, which is great value. For safaris and remote parks you usually join a shared tour or arrange a local driver from a nearby town rather than self-driving, and inside cities you combine walking in daylight with ride-hailing apps or official taxis to cover longer or sketchier stretches.
For a first-time backpack trip, I’d prioritize Nairobi for a quick city hit and practical base, at least one major wildlife area like the Maasai Mara or a cheaper alternative such as Lake Nakuru or Tsavo, and the coast around Diani, Kilifi, or Watamu for beach downtime. If you have a bit more time and like hiking, add the Rift Valley (Naivasha or Hell’s Gate) or a budget-friendly trek on the lower slopes of Mount Kenya instead of splurging on a full summit attempt.
If you’re short on time, skip trying to see too many parks and focus on just one main safari area plus one coast stop, rather than bouncing between several similar reserves. I’d also skip long detours to very remote northern regions, full Mount Kenya or Kilimanjaro-style expeditions, and extra days in Nairobi beyond what you need for logistics, since those eat time and money that are usually better spent on one strong safari and a few slow days by the ocean.
