Backpacking Maldives: A 5-Day Guide

By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 23, 2026
This 5-day route suits travelers who want more than one beach and are happy to trade an extra boat ride for a wider look at the Maldives: a day of city life, a UNESCO biosphere reserve with manta rays, and one of the best-kept local islands in the country. The pace is moderate, with one transfer every two days and full free days in between. You need the airport ferry or a taxi into Malé, one domestic flight or a long speedboat run to Baa Atoll, and a shared speedboat out to North Ari.

Day 1: Malé

Spend your first day in Male, because the capital is the only place in the country with a real street life and you pass through it anyway. Start early at the Malé Fish Market on the northern waterfront, where tuna is hauled off the dhonis and gutted on tiled counters while buyers shout prices. Walk ten minutes inland to the golden dome of the Grand Friday Mosque, the prayer hall of the Maldives Islamic Centre. Visitors are let in outside prayer times if shoulders and knees are covered. After lunch, … read more 👉

After lunch, duck into the National Museum of Maldives in Sultan Park for its pre-Islamic Buddhist carvings and royal lacquerware, then finish at the small Esjehi Art Gallery, set in one of the few traditional houses left in the city, for contemporary Maldivian work. Sleep in Malé so you are close to the airport or ferry terminal in the morning.

Days 2-3: Baa Atoll

Head north to Dharavandhoo, the local island next to Hanifaru Bay. The domestic flight takes about 35 minutes; a shared speedboat takes roughly 2 to 2.5 hours. That is the longest move of the trip, which is why it gets two nights. The Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve has held UNESCO status since 2011, and between roughly June and November plankton gets funneled into Hanifaru, pulling in dozens of manta rays and the occasional whale shark. Diving is banned in the bay, numbers are capped, and rangers time each snorkel group, so book through your guesthouse the evening you arrive. Outside manta season, day two goes to reef and sandbank trips inside the reserve instead, which are still among the healthiest coral you can reach from a guesthouse island.

Days 4-5: Ukulhas

Return to Malé in the morning and take an afternoon speedboat west to Ukulhas in North Ari, about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1.5 hours for US$40 to 55. The island runs its own waste sorting and composting, and it shows: swept sand lanes, almost no plastic on the shore. Ukulhas Beach stretches along the northern side, a long strip of soft white sand where swimwear is allowed and the lagoon stays shallow far out. Use day five for a snorkel trip to nearby reefs or a sandbank picnic, then sleep one more night before the boat back to the airport.

If manta season is over and you have a spare day in Baa, ask about a trip to Goidhoo, a quiet local island wrapped around its own enclosed lagoon.

🙋 FAQFrequently Asked Questions

Yes, the Maldives is easy to backpack independently if you stay on inhabited local islands with guesthouses instead of private resort islands.

Most nationalities get a free 30-day visa on arrival, and guesthouse doubles on islands like Maafushi, Dhigurah and Ukulhas cost roughly US$50 to 120 with breakfast. Guesthouses book boats and snorkel trips for you, often by WhatsApp. Plan around three local rules: public ferries mostly stop on Fridays, swimwear belongs only on designated bikini beaches, and alcohol is banned on local islands. English is widely spoken, cards work in Malé, and carrying some US dollar cash helps on smaller islands.
Five to seven days is the right amount of time for the Maldives on a backpacker budget, enough for two or three islands without spending every day on boats.

With 2 days, stay in the South Malé Atoll on Maafushi, 30 to 45 minutes by speedboat from the airport. With 3 days, head to Dhigurah in South Ari (1.5 to 2 hours) for whale sharks. Five days lets you add Baa Atoll for mantas and Ukulhas in North Ari. Add 2 to 3 extra days for the far south, such as Fuvahmulah or Addu Atoll, which need a domestic flight of roughly 1 to 1.5 hours.
Yes, you can get around the Maldives without a car, and you would not want one: local islands are small enough to cross on foot in 10 to 40 minutes.

Between islands you use public ferries, shared speedboats or domestic flights. The ferry from the capital to Maafushi costs roughly MVR 30 (about US$2) and takes around 1.5 hours, while the speedboat does it in 30 to 45 minutes for US$25 to 35. Speedboats to Dhigurah or Ukulhas run US$40 to 65. Flights reach Dharavandhoo in Baa in about 35 minutes. Velana airport connects to Male by a 10-minute ferry and to Hulhumale by bus or taxi.
The must-visits in the Maldives for budget travelers are a local island with a good tourist beach, at least one big marine encounter, and a morning in the capital.

Maafushi and its Bikini Beach are the easiest start, under an hour from the airport. Dhigurah in South Ari offers year-round whale shark trips for US$60 to 100 plus a long sandbank walk. Hanifaru Bay in the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve draws dozens of manta rays from roughly June to November. Ukulhas and Thoddoo in Alif Alif have some of the best local beaches. In Male, go early to the Malé Fish Market.
If you are short on time in the Maldives, skip the far-flung atolls and keep to islands within 2 hours of the airport by speedboat.

Addu Atoll, Gan, Fuvahmulah and the northern history site of Utheemu are all rewarding, but each needs a domestic flight of roughly 1 to 1.5 hours and at least 2 to 3 nights to justify the fare. Hulhumale works as an arrival night, not a destination. In Male, half a day covers the fish market and the Grand Friday Mosque; the National Museum of Maldives can go if you would rather be in the water.
Yes, our itinerary-planner does exactly that. Set your trip length in days, give your interests and travel style, optionally give start- and end location and/or some mandatory stops you would like to include and the itinerary planner creates your personalized routes for Maldives in seconds.
