5 Days in Tonga

By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 18, 2026
This five-day route suits travelers who want the full spread of Tonga in under a week: royal history on Tongatapu, serious cliff hiking on ʻEua and a sailing-and-kayaking finale in Vava’u. The pace is relaxed on the ground, with one longer travel day in the middle. You will need taxis or a hired driver on Tongatapu, the domestic ferry or a 10-minute Lulutai Airlines hop to ʻEua, and a second Lulutai flight (about 1 hour from Fua’amotu) up to Vava’u. Nothing flies or sails on Sundays here, so build your plan so that Sunday falls on a hiking or beach day rather than a transfer day.

Day 1: Nuku’alofa and the Royal East of Tongatapu

Land, drop your bag in Nuku’alofa and spend the afternoon with a driver heading east, which costs roughly T$150 to 250 (US$63 to 105) for a half day. In Mu‘a, the old seat of the Tu‘i Tonga kings, the Ancient Royal Tombs of Lapaha sit in quiet grassy plots: stepped platforms faced with huge cut slabs of coral limestone, some of them hauled by canoe from other islands. … read more 👉

Continue to Ha‘amonga ‘a Maui, a trilithon about 5 meters tall built around the 13th century, then swing down to the south coast for the Hufangalupe Natural Land Bridge, where the sea has punched through the cliff and frigatebirds ride the updrafts. It is a full afternoon, and all of it sits within 40 minutes of town.

Days 2-3: ʻEua’s Cliffs and Rainforest

Cross to ʻEua by morning ferry (2 to 2.5 hours, often rough) or by plane if your stomach objects. This island is geologically far older than Tongatapu and looks it: forested ridges rising to over 300 meters and an east coast that drops straight into the Pacific. Eua National Park covers that eastern strip, and two nights let you walk it properly instead of ticking off a lookout. Spend your first full day on the ʻEua National Park Coastal Track, linking cliff viewpoints, the Liangahuo ‘a Maui rock arch and the Matalanga ‘a Maui sinkhole, with a local guide for the less obvious junctions. Listen for the red shining parrot (koki) in the canopy, and between July and October scan the water below, because humpbacks pass close to these cliffs.

Days 4-5: Vava’u by Paddle and Sail

Day 4 is the long one: fly back to Tongatapu and connect north to Neiafu. Settle into the harborfront, where yachts swing on their moorings in the Port of Refuge, and save your energy. On Day 5 get out among the 50-plus islands of the Vava’u Island group on a kayak or sailing day trip, landing at Falevai, a small village on Kapa Island where pigs wander the path and the anchorage is glassy most mornings. From July to October, swap the paddle for a licensed whale-swim boat, typically T$400 to 500 (US$170 to 210), the single splurge in the country I would never skip.

If you have one spare hour back on Tongatapu, drive out to Anahulu Cave near the east coast and swim in its cool freshwater pool by flashlight.

🙋 FAQCommon Questions

Yes, Tonga is easy to backpack independently as long as you plan transport ahead and accept a slow island rhythm. English is widely spoken, people are helpful and solo travelers rarely feel out of place.

Guesthouses in Nuku’alofa and Neiafu cost about T$60 to 120 (US$25 to 50) a night, and ATMs are found in those two towns, so carry cash for ʻEua and Ha’apai. Book Lulutai Airlines domestic flights several days ahead, since planes are small. The one rule that catches everyone: almost everything closes on Sundays, with no flights, ferries or most shops, so stock up on Saturday.
Five to seven days works best for Tonga, enough to see Tongatapu plus one or two outer island groups without rushing.

With 2 days, stay on Tongatapu for the royal tombs at Lapaha and the west coast blowholes. With 3 days, add Vava’u, about 1 hour by plane. With 5 days, fit in ʻEua too (10 minutes by air or 2 to 2.5 hours by ferry from Nuku’alofa). Allow 10 days or more if you want Ha’apai or the slow ferry north, which takes roughly a day from Nuku’alofa to Neiafu. Always budget one buffer day for weather and Sunday closures.
Yes, you can get around Tonga without a car by combining taxis, local buses, ferries and short domestic flights.

On Tongatapu, buses leave from central Nuku’alofa for T$1 to 3 a ride but run irregularly and hardly at all on Sundays, so most travelers hire a taxi or driver for about T$150 to 250 (US$63 to 105) for a half-day sightseeing loop. The ferry to ʻEua takes 2 to 2.5 hours, and Lulutai Airlines links Tongatapu with ʻEua, Ha’apai and Vava’u. In Neiafu you walk the town and reach the islands by tour boat or kayak.
The must-visits in Tonga are the royal sites of eastern Tongatapu, the cliffs of ʻEua and the islands of Vava’u.

On Tongatapu, the Ancient Royal Tombs of Lapaha in Mu‘a and the Ha‘amonga ‘a Maui trilithon fit into one half-day trip from Nuku’alofa, with the Tonga Blowholes and Ha‘atafu Beach filling a second day out west. ʻEua National Park needs 2 nights for its coastal track. Vava’u, 1 hour north by plane, deserves at least 2 nights, especially from July to October when humpback whale swims run at about T$400 to 500 (US$170 to 210).
If you are short on time in Tonga, skip the far-north islands of Niuatoputapu and Tafahi, and do not linger at the Royal Palace.

Niuatoputapu and Tafahi are beautiful but sit about 300 kilometers north of Vava’u with infrequent flights, so they only make sense on trips of two weeks or more. The Royal Palace of Tonga in Nuku’alofa can only be viewed from outside, so 15 minutes covers it. Under a week, Ha’apai is also a fair cut, since flight schedules there can eat 2 days. Keep Pangaimotu Island, a 10-minute boat ride from Nuku’alofa, for spare afternoons only.
Yes, our itinerary-planner does exactly that. Set your trip length in days, give your interests and travel style, optionally give start- and end location and/or some mandatory stops you would like to include and the itinerary planner creates your personalized routes for Tonga in seconds.
