A Complete 7-Day Plan for DR Congo

Days 1-3: Kinshasa

On day 2, head to the southern edge of town for Lola ya Bonobo Sanctuary, the only sanctuary in the world dedicated to orphaned bonobos, where you watch the apes forage and squabble in forest enclosures from a few meters away. Days 3-4: Zongo Falls

Leave the city early by car for Zongo Falls, about 3 to 4 hours away over rough road. The Inkisi River crashes into a gorge here in a broad curtain of brown water, and the mist soaks you before you even reach the viewpoint. Stay overnight at the lodge so you can swim in the calmer pools downstream once the day-trippers leave.

Days 4-5: Matadi

From Zongo, rejoin the main highway and continue to Matadi, the country’s main seaport, wedged onto rocky hills above the Congo River. The steep streets, the cranes of the port and the view from the long suspension bridge make it worth a night, and the town has a gritty, working character very different from the capital.

Days 5-7: Boma and Moanda Beach

On day 5, travel downriver and stop in Boma for a few hours to see the old colonial quarter and the famous Stanley baobab before continuing to Moanda Beach. Two nights by the Atlantic give you grilled fish, long walks on brown sand and the sight of the Congo River pouring into the ocean near Banana. On day 7, fly or ride back to Kinshasa.

If you have an extra morning on the drive from Kinshasa, stop at the limestone caves near Mbanza-Ngungu, where locals will guide you underground by flashlight.
