A Complete 7-Day Plan for DR Congo

By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 4, 2026
This 7-day route is for travelers who want a deep dive into one region instead of racing across the whole map, with a focus on primates, volcanoes, and lakeside downtime around eastern DRC. Expect a moderately active pace using a mix of domestic flight into Goma, 4x4 transfers, and boat rides, with enough slack in the schedule to actually breathe between big experiences.

Days 1-2: Goma & Lake Kivu Arrival

Fly into Goma and give yourself time to land, literally and mentally. Goma is your adventure basecamp: a frontier city with lava-rock streets, lake views, and the logistics hub for both Virunga National Park and Nyiragongo Volcano. Spend your first full day walking the lakeside, getting your permits and park arrangements sorted, and browsing the Marché d’Art de Goma for carved masks and paintings that tell you more about the region than any brochure. The goal here is to adjust to the altitude, the rhythm, and the organized chaos before you head into the wild.

The goal here is to adjust to the altitude, the rhythm, and the organized chaos before you head into the wild.

Days 3-4: Virunga Gorillas & Conservation

Shift into the park with a 4x4 transfer to Virunga National Park, one of Africa’s most storied conservation areas. Dedicate a full day to a gorilla trek and time at the Virunga National Park Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage Centre, where you see the long game of conservation up close and understand why this region is worth the effort. The second day in Virunga gives you breathing room: you can do a lighter forest walk, birding, or simply soak in the atmosphere at camp instead of rushing straight back to town, which keeps the experience from feeling like a box-ticking exercise.

Days 5-6: Nyiragongo Volcano Ascent & Descent

With your legs warmed up and your head in mountain mode, tackle the hike up Nyiragongo Volcano. The ascent is steady but demanding, and the payoff is spending a night on the crater rim staring into one of the world’s most dramatic lava lakes, a reminder that the whole region is literally built on fire. The next day you descend, return to Goma, and let your body catch up with your brain over a slow evening by the lake, instead of trying to cram in another big move.

Day 7: Idjwi Island Slow-Down

Finish with a day trip by boat to Idjwi Island in Lake Kivu, trading lava and jungle for village life, banana groves, and quiet bays. This last day is about decompression: walking through small communities, sipping a drink by the water, and letting the week’s intensity settle before you head back to Goma for your onward journey.

As a final bonus idea once you’ve tasted eastern Congo, consider a future detour to the remote village of Obenge on the Lomami River, where forest, river, and traditional life collide far from any usual itinerary.

🙋 FAQFAQ: Backpacking DR Congo

Backpacking the Democratic Republic of the Congo independently is possible but advanced-level. It’s not like drifting through Southeast Asia; you’re dealing with limited infrastructure, checkpoints, language barriers (French and local languages), and sometimes unpredictable security. If you’re experienced, patient, and comfortable with rough travel, you can do it, but you’ll move slowly, pay more than locals, and often rely on local fixers or guides for permits, transport coordination, and safety updates in remote or sensitive areas.

For a first trip, it’s smarter to mix independent travel in safer hubs with targeted guided segments for big-ticket experiences like national parks or long river journeys. This keeps costs semi-reasonable, reduces stress, and lets you focus on the adventure instead of wrestling nonstop with logistics.
For a budget backpacker, three weeks is a realistic minimum to justify the visa cost, long travel times, and slow overland connections. That gives you time to base yourself in one or two regions, do a major experience like gorilla tracking or a big river leg, and still have buffer days for delays, which are common. Anything under two weeks usually turns into a blur of buses, checkpoints, and waiting around instead of actually seeing much.

If you can swing it, four to five weeks lets you travel at the pace the country demands: slow boats, long bus rides, and time to recover in cities like Kinshasa, Goma, or Lubumbashi. With that window you can combine one headline adventure with a couple of smaller side trips without feeling like you’re racing the clock.
You can technically get around the DRC without your own car, but it’s a test of patience and flexibility. Public transport exists in the form of crowded minibuses, shared taxis, motorbike taxis, and river boats, but schedules are loose, vehicles are often overloaded, and breakdowns or police stops can stretch a short hop into an all-day mission. For backpackers, this is part of the story, but it’s not the place to be on a tight timetable or expect comfort.

The sweet spot is using local transport for short hops between towns and within cities, then arranging private cars, 4x4s, or organized transfers for remote areas, national parks, and night travel. This keeps costs down while avoiding the riskiest or most exhausting segments, especially on bad roads or in regions where security can shift.
If you’re going to spend the money and effort to reach the DRC, prioritize one or two big experiences rather than trying to see everything. For many backpackers, that means heading to the east: Goma as a base, Lake Kivu for a breather, and, when open and safe, Virunga National Park for gorillas, volcano treks, or multi-day hikes. This combo gives you wild landscapes, serious adventure, and a sense of the country’s raw energy without spreading yourself too thin.

On a longer trip, Kinshasa is worth a few days for its music scene, riverfront, and sheer chaos, especially if you’re into nightlife and people-watching. If you’re overlanding from the south, Lubumbashi and the Katanga region can be a good introduction, with slightly better infrastructure and a softer landing before you dive into the tougher routes.
If you’re short on time, skip trying to cross huge distances overland just for the sake of it. The romantic idea of doing a full river or rail epic sounds great, but in reality you’ll burn days sitting on a boat or stuck in transit hubs instead of actually exploring. Focus on one region, like the east around Goma and Lake Kivu or the Kinshasa area, and go deeper there instead of zigzagging across the map.

Also skip minor towns that don’t offer a clear draw beyond “it’s on the way,” especially if they require long detours on bad roads. In the DRC, every extra leg is a potential delay, extra checkpoint, and extra cost. Put your limited time and money into one or two headline experiences and a couple of solid stopovers rather than chasing a long list of names.
