The Perfect 15-Day Route for Serbia

By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated April 25, 2025
This 15-day route is for travelers who want the full Serbia arc: big-city energy, Danube fortresses, spa towns, monasteries, and serious mountain scenery, moving at a measured pace with buses, a couple of trains, and a few targeted private transfers to reach wilder corners. You’ll loop from Belgrade through the Danube gorge, central monasteries, and western highlands before finishing in the north.

Days 1-3: Belgrade Foundations

Start with three nights in Belgrade to anchor the whole trip. Spend your first day walking Knez Mihailova Street, exploring Belgrade Fortress, and watching the Sava and Danube meet from the ramparts before drifting through Republic Square into Skadarlija Bohemian Quarter for dinner and music. On day two, dive into the country’s story at the National Museum of Serbia, then balance it with the Nikola Tesla Museum to see how Serbia frames its scientific hero. Use day three as a “live like a local” day at Ada Ciganlija and Sava Lake Beach, swimming, renting a bike, or … read more 👉

Start with three nights in Belgrade to anchor the whole trip. On day two, dive into the country’s story at the National Museum of Serbia, then balance it with the Nikola Tesla Museum to see how Serbia frames its scientific hero. Use day three as a “live like a local” day at Ada Ciganlija and Sava Lake Beach, swimming, renting a bike, or just café-hopping along the shore before one last night in the capital.

Days 4-5: Đerdap Gorge & Golubac Fortress

Head east along the Danube to the dramatic Đerdap area, ideally with a bus plus a short transfer to keep things sane. Base yourself near the river for two nights and spend your first afternoon exploring Golubac Fortress, a jagged medieval stronghold clinging to the narrowing Danube where the river starts to feel like a lake between cliffs. On the second day, hike one of the marked trails in Đerdap National Park or take a boat trip into the Iron Gates section, where steep walls and carved rock faces show off the wildest side of the river frontier.

Days 6-7: Manasija, Resava Cave & Vrnjačka Banja

Travel inland toward central Serbia, aiming for the spa town of Vrnjačka Banja as your two-night base. En route, stop at Manasija monastery, a fortified medieval complex where frescoes and thick walls tell stories of both faith and siege. Continue to Resava Cave for a cool underground detour through stalactites and echoing chambers, then roll into Vrnjačka Banja for an evening stroll among fountains and park paths. Use your second day here to soak in the spa vibe, sample mineral springs, and rest up before heading deeper into the mountains.

Days 8-9: Studenica, Kopaonik & High-Mountain Air

From Vrnjačka Banja, make your way toward the Kopaonik region for two nights, using a mix of bus and transfer. On the way, visit Studenica Monastery, a UNESCO-listed complex where white stone churches and centuries-old frescoes sit in a quiet river valley, giving you one of Serbia’s most powerful spiritual stops. Continue into Kopaonik National Park and the broader Kopaonik region, where your full day is all about hiking alpine-style trails, breathing crisp air, and watching the light change over rolling ridges before a hearty mountain dinner.

Days 10-12: Tara, Bajina Bašta & Mokra Gora

Travel west to the Tara area, basing yourself around Bajina Bašta for three nights to avoid constant packing. Use your first full day to explore Tara National Park: hike to viewpoints over the Drina River, wander through dense forests, and, if time allows, detour to the famous house-on-the-rock in the river near town. On the second day, head to Mokra Gora and Drvengrad, riding the narrow-gauge train if it’s operating and exploring the wooden hilltop village built for film but now serving as a quirky mountain lookout. Evenings back in Bajina Bašta are for slow dinners and watching the mountains fade into darkness.

Days 13-15: Novi Sad, Petrovaradin & Sremski Karlovci

Make the longer but worthwhile journey north to Novi Sad for your final three nights, trading mountains for Danube charm. Spend your first afternoon wandering the pedestrian center before crossing to Petrovaradin Fortress / Novi Sad’s Petrovaradin Fortress for tunnels, ramparts, and a wide-angle view of the city and river. On day fourteen, take a short trip into Fruška Gora for easy hikes and monastery visits, or simply linger in Novi Sad’s cafés. Use your last full day for a half-day visit to Sremski Karlovci, where compact streets, churches, and wine cellars give you a final, mellow taste of Vojvodina before looping back to Belgrade or onward.

Once you’ve done this grand loop, a future deep-cut detour to the remote Pešter villages—where high plateaus, sheep flocks, and star-heavy skies rule the night—will feel like the natural sequel.

🙋 FAQGood to Know

Serbia is very doable to backpack independently, especially if you’ve handled any other Eastern or Central European country. English is common with younger people, buses and trains are cheap, and locals are generally curious and helpful once you make the first move. The main thing to watch is that schedules and info can feel old-school, so it helps to stay flexible, arrive early for transport, and keep small cash on you for tickets, bakeries, and random fees.
If you only have 5–7 days, focus on Belgrade, Novi Sad, and one quick nature escape like Tara or Uvac and you’ll still feel like you got a solid taste. With 10–14 days, you can slow down, add Niš and some monasteries, hike in the southwest, and actually enjoy café culture instead of sprinting between bus stations, which is where Serbia really starts to shine for backpackers.
You can absolutely get around Serbia without a car, but you’ll lean more on buses than trains. Trains are improving but still slower and less frequent, while buses connect almost every town and are cheap enough that even multiple hops in a day won’t wreck your budget. For rural areas and national parks you may need to time your visit around the limited buses or base yourself in a nearby town and use taxis or hitchhiking for the last stretch.
For a first trip, Belgrade is the obvious base: gritty nightlife, fortress sunsets, and long riverside walks that cost nothing if you self-cater and pregame from the supermarket. Novi Sad is the softer, café-heavy counterpoint with easy day trips to Fruška Gora monasteries, while the southwest—Tara National Park, Uvac Canyon, Zlatibor—gives you big views, cheap mountain guesthouses, and hiking that feels wildly underpriced compared to the Alps.
If you’re short on time, skip trying to see every spa town, random small city, or distant monastery just because it’s on a list; many feel similar and eat up hours of bus travel. I’d also skip deep train nerd itineraries and long detours to border towns unless they clearly fit your route, and instead put that time into one extra day in Belgrade, Novi Sad, or the mountains where you can actually slow down and let the place get under your skin.
Yes, our itinerary-planner does exactly that. Set your trip length in days, give your interests and travel style, optionally give start- and end location and/or some mandatory stops you would like to include and the itinerary planner creates your personalized routes for Serbia in seconds.
