5 Days in Switzerland

By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 5, 2026
This 5-day Jungfrau region itinerary is for travelers who want maximum alpine drama with minimum packing and unpacking, moving at a relaxed but adventure-heavy pace using trains, mountain railways, and cable cars only. You’ll base yourself in one valley, ride classic cog railways, and mix big-ticket viewpoints with easy-to-moderate hikes instead of racing across the whole country.

Days 1-2: Interlaken & Lauterbrunnen Valley base

Arrive by train to Interlaken, shake off the travel day with a lakeside walk, and get your bearings between Lakes Thun and Brienz without over-scheduling your first afternoon. The next morning, roll into the heart of the mountains by taking the short train ride into Lauterbrunnen Valley, where 72 waterfalls, sheer cliffs, and classic Swiss farmhouses give you that “this is why I came to Switzerland” feeling in a single glance; use the rest of the day for gentle valley walks and short cable-car rides rather than big summit missions so you’re fresh for the high-altitude … read more 👉

Days 3-4: Jungfraujoch, Mürren & Jungfrau Region Hikes

Use a full day for the bucket-list train journey up to Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe, riding via Kleine Scheidegg and stepping out onto the glacier plateau where you can wander the ice tunnels and soak in the Aletsch Glacier views without rushing back down. On the next day, head up to the car-free clifftop village of Mürren and spend the day sampling Jungfrau Region Hikes at your level—anything from mellow balcony trails above the valley to more demanding routes—so you actually feel the landscape under your boots instead of only seeing it through train windows.

Day 5: Grindelwald & Eiger Trail finale

On your last full day, ride the train around to Grindelwald, a perfect launchpad for getting up close to the north face of the Eiger without needing technical skills. Take the mountain transport up to the start of the Eiger Trail and hike beneath the famous wall, timing your descent so you can linger over a late-afternoon drink in the village before catching an evening or next-morning train onward, with your camera roll full and your legs pleasantly tired.

My favorite moment on this route is that first quiet stretch of the Eiger Trail when the crowds thin and it’s just you, the rock face, and the sound of cowbells drifting up from the valley.

🙋 FAQFrequently Asked Questions

Switzerland is very easy to backpack independently, even for a first big trip. Trains run on time, hiking trails are clearly marked, tap water is drinkable almost everywhere, and people switch to English quickly if you get stuck. The catch is the cost, so you keep it manageable by staying in hostels, using supermarket food (Coop/Migros), refilling bottles from fountains, and grabbing free or cheap city walking tours instead of paid excursions.
If you want a quick taste of cities plus mountains, 5–7 days is enough to hit one or two regions without feeling rushed. For a more relaxed backpacking loop with real hiking days, 10–14 days lets you mix cities like Zurich or Bern with mountain bases such as Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, or Zermatt and still have time to wait out bad weather instead of paying big money for foggy views.
You can absolutely get around Switzerland without a car; in fact, for backpackers it is usually cheaper and easier. Trains, buses, and boats are integrated on one timetable, mountain villages are linked by cable cars and postbuses, and many hostels sit within a short walk of a station. To save money, use regional passes or Saver Day Passes when they fit your route, and plan your big hops on fewer days instead of lots of short, random trips.
For a first backpacking trip, the Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen area is the classic base because you get waterfalls, big peaks, and easy day hikes from one spot. I would pair that with at least one city with character, like Bern or Lucerne, and if you have time and the weather looks good, add Zermatt for the Matterhorn or the Engadine (around St. Moritz or Scuol) for quieter trails and cheaper dorm beds than the most famous hotspots.
If you are short on time, skip trying to see every famous mountain viewpoint; they are expensive and start to blur together, so pick one or two big-ticket cable cars and ignore the rest. I would also skip long detours to far-flung resort towns just to say you went, and avoid cramming in too many cities; it is better for your budget and your sanity to choose one city base and one or two mountain areas instead of zigzagging across the whole country.
