10 Days in Suriname

This 10-day route is built for travelers who want wildlife over museums: nesting sea turtles on the Atlantic coast and monkeys, birds and granite domes in the central rainforest of Suriname. The pace is moderate, with two long travel days balanced by multi-night stays. Days 3-5: Albina and Galibi

On day three, ride 2 to 2.5 hours east to Albina, the river town facing French Guiana across the Marowijne, and board a boat downriver to Galibi Nature Reserve. The reserve is co-managed by Kaliña Indigenous villages, and staying in their guesthouses gets you closer to Galibi Beach than any day trip could. Nights are the main event from roughly March to August, when leatherback and green turtles come ashore to nest; days are for swimming in the brown river water and walking the village. Two nights give you two chances at the beach before you return to the capital on day five.

Days 6-9: Raleighvallen and Voltzberg

The second half goes deep. Raleighvallen Nature Reserve, part of the vast Central Suriname Nature Reserve, is reached by a long road to the Coppename River and then hours by boat, or by a short charter flight. The lodge sits on Foengoe Island beside a chain of rapids, and spider monkeys and cock-of-the-rock birds live in the surrounding forest. The big day is the Voltzberg hike: a 2.5 to 3 hour forest walk to the base of a bare granite dome, then a steep scramble to the top for a view over solid canopy. Three nights mean you can do the climb, rest, and still fish or swim at the falls. Day nine is the long trip back to Paramaribo, leaving day ten for your departure.

On the way back from the interior, if your driver agrees, stop at Blakawatra, a creek of tea-colored water south of the capital where locals swim on weekends.
