10 Days in Myanmar

By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 18, 2026
This ten-day route is built for travelers who want Myanmar’s hill country and its last royal capital, with a real trek in the middle rather than a string of city stops. The style is active but unhurried: two nights almost everywhere, one night in a village. You’ll need a domestic flight from Yangon to Heho, local taxis or pickups in the Shan hills, a boat across the lake at the end of the trek, and either a flight or bus to Mandalay.

Days 1-2: Yangon

Use Yangon to get over the flight and get tuned in. Two nights let you wander the downtown grid of peeling colonial facades and Indian and Chinese quarters, eat mohinga at a tea shop for breakfast, and settle into the slower rhythm of the country before heading into the hills.

Days 3-4: Kalaw

Fly to Heho and take a taxi about an hour to Kalaw, an old British hill station at around 1,300 meters where the nights are cool and the morning market fills with Pa-O, Danu and Shan traders. Spend a full day walking the pine ridges and arranging your trek … read more 👉

Days 3-4: Kalaw

Fly to Heho and take a taxi about an hour to Kalaw, an old British hill station at around 1,300 meters where the nights are cool and the morning market fills with Pa-O, Danu and Shan traders. Spend a full day walking the pine ridges and arranging your trek with a local guide; the outfitters here handle bag transfer to the lake.

Days 5-6: Trekking to Inle

The walk from Kalaw to Inle Lake runs through red-earth farmland, tea plots and hill villages, with a night in a village house or monastery. This two-day version is the right length for most people; legs feel it, but nobody is miserable. It ends with a boat ride across Inle Lake past leg-rowing fishermen to Nyaungshwe.

Days 6-8: Nyaungshwe and the Pa-O Stupas

Two nights in Nyaungshwe give you time to recover in a canal-side guesthouse and cycle to the vineyards on the hill east of town. On day 7, drive through Taunggyi, the Shan State capital, where you pick up the required Pa-O guide, then continue about an hour to the Kakku Pagodas, a field of more than 2,000 stupas topped with tinkling bells. On day 8, fly from Heho or ride a bus to Mandalay.

Days 8-10: Mandalay

In Mandalay, start before dawn at Mahamuni Buddha Temple for the face-washing ritual of its heavily gilded image. Later, visit Kuthodaw Pagoda, where 729 marble slabs carved with Buddhist scripture each sit in their own white shrine, then climb Mandalay Hill (about 240 meters) for the view over the city grid. Save your final sunset for U Bein Bridge, the long teak footbridge in Amarapura, before flying out on day 10.

For a bonus morning, take the river boat from Mandalay to Mingun and stand at the base of the colossal, earthquake-cracked Mingun Pahtodawgyi, the unfinished stupa that was meant to be the largest in the world.

🙋 FAQTraveler FAQ

Yes, backpacking Myanmar independently works well on the central circuit of Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay and Inle Lake, where buses, guesthouses and English-speaking staff are easy to find. Since the 2021 coup, though, large areas such as Rakhine, Chin, Kachin and northern Shan are closed to foreigners or in active conflict.

Apply for the eVisa online before you fly (about US$50 for a tourist visa). Book express buses through your guesthouse a day ahead; Yangon to Bagan runs 9 to 10 hours overnight for roughly US$6 to 12. Dorms and simple guesthouses cost about US$8 to 25 a night. Carry clean, crisp US dollar notes as backup, since foreign-card ATM access can be patchy.
Ten to fourteen days covers Myanmar’s core circuit of Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay and Inle Lake at a comfortable pace, while 15 days lets you add the Golden Rock and Hpa-An in the southeast.

With only 5 days, stick to Bagan and a day trip to Popa Mountain. A realistic split for longer trips is 3 nights in Bagan, 2 in Mandalay, 2 to 3 around Inle Lake and 1 to 2 in Yangon. Distances are long: Yangon to Bagan takes 9 to 10 hours by bus, and Bagan to Inle 8 to 10 hours, so domestic flights (about 1 to 1.5 hours) buy back whole days.
Yes, you can travel all of Myanmar’s main tourist circuit without a car, using express buses, domestic flights and the occasional shared taxi.

Overnight express buses link the big stops: Yangon to Mandalay in 8 to 9 hours and Yangon to Bagan in 9 to 10 hours, typically US$6 to 12. Mandalay to Bagan takes 5 to 6 hours. Domestic flights cover Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay and Heho (for Inle Lake) in 30 to 80 minutes, usually around US$80 to 150 one way. Locally, rent an e-bike in Bagan for 8,000 to 15,000 kyat a day and hire a boat on Inle Lake.
Bagan and Inle Lake are the two places in Myanmar that nearly every traveler should see, followed by Mandalay and Yangon.

Bagan needs 3 days for its temple plain, with Ananda, Dhammayangyi and Sulamani as the anchors. Inle Lake takes 2 to 3 days from Nyaungshwe, ideally reached on the 2 or 3 day trek from Kalaw. Mandalay pairs with U Bein Bridge and Sagaing over 2 days. If you have more time, the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda (Golden Rock), 4 to 5 hours by bus from Yangon, and the karst caves of Hpa-An are the best additions in the southeast.
If you’re short on time in Myanmar, skip the beaches, the southeast and the hill towns, and spend your days on Bagan and Inle Lake instead.

Ngwe Saung Beach costs 2 to 3 extra days once you count the 5 to 6 hour drive each way, and Ngapali Beach in Rakhine State is currently off-limits because of fighting. The Golden Rock needs a night and 4 to 5 hours of bus each way from Yangon. Pyin Oo Lwin adds 2 hours from Mandalay for gardens and colonial architecture. In Yangon, one full day covers the essentials, so keep that stop short and put the spare night in Bagan.
Yes, our itinerary-planner does exactly that. Set your trip length in days, give your interests and travel style, optionally give start- and end location and/or some mandatory stops you would like to include and the itinerary planner creates your personalized routes for Myanmar in seconds.
