Yes, Zimbabwe is very doable independently along the main Harare, Masvingo, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls corridor, though it takes more planning than South Africa or Namibia, mainly around cash and park access.
Carry US dollars in small notes, since card machines and ATMs are unreliable outside
Victoria Falls and Harare. Dorm beds run roughly US$15 to 25, and the KAZA visa (US$50) covers both Zimbabwe and Zambia. Buses link the cities in 4 to 6 hours per leg, but parks like
Hwange and
Matobo need a transfer or hired driver, so budget US$60 to 100 for those days. People are friendly and English is widely spoken.
Ten to fourteen days covers Zimbabwe’s main highlights comfortably, while five days is enough for Victoria Falls plus a safari in Hwange.
With 10 days, run Harare to
Great Zimbabwe (4 to 5 hours by bus), on to
Bulawayo and the Matobo Hills (about 4 hours), then to
Victoria Falls (5 to 6 hours). Two weeks lets you add the Eastern Highlands, with two nights each in Nyanga and the Bvumba, and a proper stop in
Hwange National Park. Plan two nights per stop at minimum, because a single night barely covers the travel day.
Yes, you can travel between Zimbabwe’s cities without a car, but reaching the national parks usually means a transfer, tour or hired driver.
Long-distance buses cover Harare to Bulawayo in 5 to 6 hours, Harare to Mutare in about 4 hours and Bulawayo to
Victoria Falls in 5 to 6 hours, typically for US$10 to 25. An overnight train also runs from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls, taking 12 hours or more. Kombis handle short hops, and taxis reach
Khami or
Epworth. For
Matobo, expect US$60 to 100 for a car and driver, and use lodge shuttles for
Hwange.
Victoria Falls, Great Zimbabwe, the Matobo Hills and Hwange National Park are the places in Zimbabwe you shouldn’t miss.
Give
Victoria Falls two nights, enough for the rainforest viewpoints (US$50 entry) and the bridge.
Great Zimbabwe, 27 kilometers from Masvingo, needs a full morning for its mortarless walls. Base in Bulawayo for the rock art and granite domes of
Matobo National Park, 35 kilometers south, and visit Khami Ruins on the side.
Hwange deserves at least two nights for its huge elephant herds. With extra time, add the Eastern Highlands around Nyanga and the Bvumba, which are cool and green and make a good break from the heat.
If time is short in Zimbabwe, skip the extra days in Harare, the transit towns such as Gweru and Chivhu, and the Kariba Dam viewpoint.
Harare is a good place to arrive and sort out a SIM card, but one night is plenty unless you want its galleries. Gweru sits on the Harare to Bulawayo road with little to hold you, so ride straight through.
Kariba is wonderful on a houseboat but needs 3 to 4 days to justify the 5 to 6 hour trip from Harare. Remote parks like
Mana Pools and
Gonarezhou are superb but demand a vehicle and several days, so save them for a second trip.
